I purchased a pair of what i thought to be regular white stripped maroons when today I noticed that the more dominate female fish is starting to have a serious yellow tint to her "white" stripes. I purchased them from Petco and a friend (marine biologist) and I both could swear that the yellow stripped and white stripped are from different regions and cannot remmeber anything about color change or shifts. The other smaller fish is not showing the yellow tint at this time. Any thoughts?

If you did get a yellow striped consider yourself lucky! They are about twice as expensive.

How small are they? Gold striped maroons don't start getting the gold in the stipe until they are about 9 months old or more and maybe an inch in length or greater. You live dangerously buying fish from PetCo. Hope you don't get oodinium and/or ick/other nasty things throughout your tanks.

From what I remember, Petco only buys its clownfish from ORA. According to ORA's website, all their maroon clowns are gold striped.....I just bought my last one from Petco for that reason, we'll see if it turns colors after a while, he's already paired up with my female....

Ditto to Larry. Juvenile maroon clowns all have white stripes.

I'd strongly recommend a freshwater dip - it'll kill a lot, if not most, of the potential nasties...... Clownfish in particular handle them very well.

They are healthy and have been the only inhabitants of the tank for over 4 months.

The day I walked into Petco was the last day I will ever walk in one of their stores. I saw a new shipment of clowns "trying" to acclimate - 1/4 of them dead or dying - prob 30 or so of them crammed in a 20 or so gal tank. Told one of the employees about it and they told me that's how they acclimate - that it was normal....BS

Glad they are healthy Psych....

I bought my white maroon clown fish about 3 years ago and just last year it also started to chenge its stripes to yellow. When i got it from Marine depot, the stripes where white.
