This picture was taken by my OLD HP618. The G5 after 1,000s of shot for me anyway never came close??????
I ordered my Sony.

Joshua,
That is it exactly. The auto focus would never dail itself in. And manual never had a chance!

I'm sorry to hear that Jim. The Canon G5 should be leages better then the Canon A70($250) I used to take a couple of pictures of your tank. I think MikeP has a G5; maybe he could shed some light on it.

I actually have a g2, it's a good camera except without an additional macro lens the optical zoon is worthless. Other than using manual focus I don't know what to say - for macro shots the Nikon coolpix line are still about the best out of box but the canon powershot series seem to be excellent all around cameras.

If you want some tips the best site I found was:

www.dpreview.com

they have information and some tutorials on individual cameras that I picked up a lot from.

I believe point and shoot cameras use an infared focusing system which sees the glass as opaque.... I haven't checked the technical specs on the G5 but when I worked at Capitol Camera a lot of the point and shoot cameras back then had the same issue.

The G5 really is a darn good camera - you very likely could have the same problems with the Sony. I'd look for a camera with a good MF option.

The digital rebel by Canon is awesome - I think you can find it for $999 with a lens. Digital slr's use a different mechanism for AF..and image quality is simply unrivaled by anything else out there digital right now - at least anything under ten grand. :D

Another great camera bang for the buck wise is the Olympus c5050 and c5060. Incredible feature set and very rugged. Takes AA batteries and can use 3 different types of media (2 different cards can be in the camera at the same time!) Also comes with a wireless remote..... The only thing I didn't like was the amount of noise at higher ASA's..... Image quality is superb at ASA 100 or less. (some of the pics on my photo website are with my c5050 - its www.harrisimaging.com )

(sorry, I was a photo major.....I can go on and on about this stuff :) ) A very good website for digital camera reviews is www.dpreview.com

Id go with the digital rebel by Canon for sure. I have a friend that has a G3. His macros are out of this world. The G5 has to much CA purple fragging, Do I hear.

mharris7 is right on. I've posted lots of pictures, everyody seems to think they're awesome and I'm using an Olympus C4040, the predecessor to the C5050 & 5060. You have the option to use attachments so you can add on lenses. Tough to beat for the price and takes awesome pictures of reefs and everything else I point it at.
