I have an old breeder box sitting around and was thinking of making a refugium out of it after seeing CPRs version of it.

Im planning on cutting the little floats off the ends, putting suction cups on it and sticking it on the back wall of the tank. The CPR version has a small Rio power head hooked on to it. I was thinking of drilling holes on the front and back of it and sticking it in front of My intake. Do you guys think this would work? If not I will pop for the power head, Just trying to get away a little cheaper. Thats half of what DIY is for.

Thanks,
Mike

what size is the fuge and what size is your tank? you have to be able to control water flow into the fuge. how much was the DIY?

The tank is the 12 gallon JBJ Nano-Cube. The breeder box I was planning on useing if I had to guess is somewhere between a 24 and 32 oz. How much current needs to go through it?

Breeder box- $7.00/ but has been sitting around unused forever
Rio PowerHead- found online for $10, Havent really looked around at an LFS yet

The CPR version I found online was about $30 and was 7 3/4 in L x 4 in w x 7 1/2 in H. The breeder box is about half that size. This breeder box would fit real good without getting in the way. The CPR would probably be too big. It would fit but be in the way a little more then I would like.

Thanks,
Mike

i think that would work fine. going to take a really small light. you want a slow water flow into the fuge in your case very slow. maybe a super small power head from the tank into the fuge and gravity feed back to the tank that if any pods excape they come into the tank alive. thats how i have mind running. do not put any kind of fish in the fuge. you want the pods to multiply in the fuge, and they will. hope this helps a little.

Well it was going to be in the tank itself along the back wall so it will already have lighting. As far as water movement, you think I should just let what ever water moves through the hole be it or should I stick a small power head on there? Maybe the Rio 50 which is 69 gph. If need be I can save one of those floats I cut off the side and silicone it in front of the powerhead to divert the water flow to the water surface. That might be good, to help the water oxygenate too.

oh i thought you were hanging it on the outside. in that case you could divert some water from your water in. you do'nt want the water in the fuge to become stagnaded. hope haveing it on the inside does'nt take up a lot of the little room you have.

How much light do you think I will need, Im debating if I should do this or useing the Nano-Cube sump as a refugium. I already have some small chucks of LR back their. There already is some light back there. Not much direct light, but there is light. The sump isnt very big maybe a gallon and a half or so. 2 inches wide and runs the length and height of the aquarium.
