I have been thinking of putting a 300 GPH CPR overflow on my 30 hex, into an old 8 gallon hex underneath my stand. (I know 8 gallons isn't a lot, but hear me out)

The idea, is to get everything together, and then drill the pack of the 8 and put a peltier chiller on it. I don't want to drill the 30 hex. The light canopy I am building is going to have a 175 watt metal halide on it, in an enclosed canopy with only a couple fans 'pushing and pulling' air through it for cooling, and as you might imagine, I am very concerned at what the metal halide will do for temperatures within the tank.

If the 8 is wide enough, I am going to stick a remora on it.

So the question is, it's about a 5 foot rise from the 8 to the top of the 30. Along the way, there will be a SCWD, and if I use PVC, a 90 degree knucle coming out of the 8, and four more going in. I think the SCWD is designed for 3/4 inch tubing. SO i figure with the 90 degree turns, I am looking at around 8 or 9 feet. (I think the rule of thumb is add a foot for every 90 degree turn?)

So with 8 or 9 feet of head pressure, plus the SCWD, and a CPR that conly take out 300 GPH, what pump do you think I should get? I was thinking one of the Magdrive series.

According to this chart http://www.marinedepot.com/aquarium_powerheads_pumps_danner_mag_drive_supreme .asp?CartId=

I should be looking at a MagDrve 7 or 9.5, I think the seven will be slightly to weak, and the 9.5 a little too p owerful... :(

Still learning I guess! ;)

Mag pumps have terrible pressure performance and are over rated for flow. Try borrowing the 9.5. But, why don't you get an iwaki 20rlt or something like, maybe the blueline HD20 or the pan world. (same pump)

I don't know if you've already bought the CPR overflow, but they are notorious for failing. If you can, I suggest bailing on that and having Dan make you a small overflow.

Matt, thanks for the suggestions. I tool a look at some IWAKI's, and they are a little out of my current price range, though, perhaps by the time I get the overflow setup, it will be something i can get.

So dan makes good overflows? sorry, I don't know everyone here? how do I contact him?

I would have to agree with Matt on the pumps. Try to find a pressure rated pump if you are going to use the swcd. If a new iwaki is out of you price range ck the for sale forum on RC or ebay. I bought three iwaki's for $120, all great pumps. My favorite pump was an older model "Quiet One" pump. That pump is floating somewhere in this group, should have kept that one.
