Don't know if it's the best way but was doing my water change last night and got a little taste myself when starting the siphon.

Boy did that water need to be changed!!!!!!!!! :o

That has been a big hint to me a few times, too! If I cannot stand the nasty taste of the water, imagine how the fish feel. I have also tasted the salt I was mixing up to see if it was saltwater or salt with a little water. I stick to the refractometer for more precise measurement, though!
