Well, now that my damsel is doing better I've noticed major brownish algae-like growth all over my live rock and much of the live sand in patches. I've tried to ignore it for the time being while my damsel recovers from the severe ammonia spike that killed the Yellow Tang. Now that the damsel seems almost back to normal I've been tempted to figure out what do about the yuck in the tank. I've been making daily 5g water changes in my 29g tank to help the damsel as suggested buy other forum members and it work like magic...but in the process it only got much more brownish yuck all over the rocks and live sand. I was affraid to touch it with my damsel doing so poor but now that the damsel is much better and looks likely to recover fully I asked a local fish store what to do and they suggested using a product called chem-clean. I have no idea if its a good thing or if any special precautions should be used. How do you use it? Is it truely safe? Any suggestions? I thought about ditching the live rock as it looks bad with all the yuck over it but thought that's kinda dumb...I should be able to get rid of the brownish yuck. I did get rid of much of the yuck from the live sand by vacuming dring the latest water change but its all over the live rocks.....any ideas would be welcomed.

If its a dark red or purple and feels slimy, then it is "slime" algae or cyanobacteria. Chemi Clean is awesome at getting rid of it. It got rid of my cyano shortly after I setup my 20 gallon. I think its $15-$20 but it is well worth it. Are you using RO water now?
