I know it is cheaper in price, but I'm not sure it has been through the same cleaning processes as filter material made for aquatic use. I know most pillow filler is allergy free and stuff like that, but I think it may still be coated with a fire retardant. You can buy the aquatic filter material in bulk size and simply cut it to whatever size you need. It is cheaper to go that route. Pet's Mart sells a package that is like $3 or $4.

For your type of tank, don't mess with the pillow material. It's going to break up into single strand and clog up your pump/return. And float around your tank too. Soon, you might see the strand hanging out of your fishes's behind.

I've been using the roles of batting they sell at Wal-Mart in the craft area for over a year without any problems. No algea problems or loss of life so far, take it for what it's worth.

I used to run it in my canister filter all the time. Never had any problem with it....
