Just curious if anybody has tried the new Oceanic Salt yet? They have it in stock in College Station so I figured surely somebody in Austin or San Antonio has had a chance to pick some up. Does anybody know anything more about this salt than what www.Oceanicsystems.com says? I would think that if Oceanic is going to get into making salk they won't be doing a half-way job.

What I know about it is that is disolves very easily, but tends towards the lower pH scale of 7.8-8.0.

I myself have not had the chance. I did go to there web site when they were going to send a sample for free but I never got it from them. :( So since OUR impression of this new salt is of so little value I will continue to use what I have.

I tested a 5gal bag I got and got:
Alk-~8.0
Calc-450+
No3- 0.0
Ph - 7.8-8.0
I don't know if the Ph test kit (salifert) isn't very accurate, but the low ph is a little bit of a downer. But it mixes up superfast... 20 seconds of shaking, I even let the water sit for ~30 min and nothing settled to the bottom. I like it, but i got a 50gal bag of Bio-Sea i have to use first.

I got my free sample last friday, I got about the same stats as above. I picked up a 90Gal Bucket, mixed up 32 Gal. It's crystal clear in 30 sec. I did a small water change this morning and everything still looks great.

Wow, the Ca level looks much better than Instant Ocean. Where did you guys sign up for the free sample. Was it on the Oceanic website? I couldn't find it there?

I went to Petland today and they have a 50gallon for $16.99... Same price as the old bag type... I thought it was supposed to be more expensive?

I emailed Oceanic using the customerservice link on their website. The salt showed up the next day. Their target price was to meet or beat IO is what their reps are saying.

I havent seen the stuff yet but it kinda concerns me that it mixes up so easily. has anyone checked the magnesium content?? useually if they mix up really easy it dosent have enough in the mix or is at a very low level.
useually if something is too good to be true......
and im not sure i would switch over in my tank sometimes changing
salts can really screw up a tank IMO..
I would say if you want to try it start up a small 10 or 15 gallon tank and see how it does. Remember just because one company makes good tanks dosent mean that we should throw caution to the wind and just assume they make good salt. Im not nocking oceanic, i have one myself but im not going to just jump into somethig without testing it first and by that i mean testing it over a period of 6 or 8 month or longer.
just my thoughts....

It was 1350 on my salifert test kit. Someone else got 1320 when tested.
