cheating?

is hooking up your nano tank to your main tank cheating as far as nano tanks are concern? you know a place to have little stuff like zoos and mushrooms and still have good water perametors.

nah dude, its not cheating, heck if i had the resources to do it that way i would, and im sure any nano keeper will tell u the same. what would be kool is if u kould have it on ur desk and still set up to the main tank!!!

That depends on who you ask. I would not call a nano, 'nano' if the actual system contained over 40 gallons of water. My 20g nano is a single 20 tank with a bakpak skimmer and no other water container. Many of the nano guys would say that a 20g is not 'nano'. This has been argued on www.nanoreefs.com more than once.

If you want a more successful small tank you should definitely attach it to a sump, refugium, or other tank. My 58/40 system has become much more stable since I added the 40g tank to the already running system. I have my hard corals in the 58 on top which has high light and many of my softies, mushrooms, and zoos in the 40 on the bottom.

Key is what is best for the critters in the tank. More water = better stability. You definately have enough water! If you ever decide to go crazy and sell that tank, let me know!

when i find some time i'm going to build me a little 15 or 20 gal bow front and start me a nano. i will be hooking her up to the main tank. put a few p/c on it. sweet huw?

Isn't that just a really fancy sump without all your pumps and stuff in it or a fancy refugium with more flow. You cheater Dan!! :D

I did that once with my old 110G FO tank. I wanted to get into reef tanks, but I coudn't put corals and inverts in ther because of my eel and triggerl. So I drilled the side of a 20G tank from Petco and made a stand for it next to my tank. I hooked it up to the same sump and It was doing fine untill I sold the tank. Although the water condition wes more stable that way, the problem for me was that my FO tank did not need all the dosing a reef tank needs, so basicalliy I was dosing for 130G when only 20G really needed it. Also the large fish I had produced lots of waste, too much for a reef tank.
