What size of pump would I need for a 54gallon cornerbow, It
s got 1in. drain and return holes and a dan's overflow with matching wetdry. I've had a lot of different ideas , but I'm leaning toward the mag9.5 as a pump, any ideas?? Any for sale?? Reliability is key in this department for me!!

If you want reliability, go for an iwaki. For this size tank either the MD20rxt or 30rxt would be fine. There's a new japanese company called Pan World that makes very similar pumps, designed by a former iwaki engineer. They're sold by champion as bluelineHD pumps, and premium just started carrying them as pan world pumps. Don't be concerned about the gph rating as compared to the mag; iwakis are much more conservatively rated for flow than mags.

As Matt said if you have the room go for an external pump like an iwaki(great pumps) or something similar. You will be glad you did. If space is an issue, and it could be on a tank with a small footprint, then the mag 9.5 or even a mag 12 would be fine. As for reliability, regular maintence is key to a long life in any pump as is correct setup. Good luck

Just as Matt and Henry have mentioned external pumps are better but some can generate extra heat and can be a lot more expensive. If space is a problem Mag pumps are very reliable and I have had mine for a few years without any problems (so far). I would recommend going with a Mag 9.5 or Mag 12 as Henry mentioned because you can always decrease the power of a pump but never increase it. God luck with this.

Fabian; I'm pretty sure any sizable submersible pump generate more heat than a comparable external pump. With external, air does a lot of the cooling, but with a submersible it's all done by tank water.

I have run both mag drives and iwaki's. As far as the water flow, I greatly prefer the Iwaki. The Mag drives have always proven reliable for me, but the Iwaki seems to put out a little better pressure. My 55 is run by a magdrive right now and it has done a nice job. The heat it puts out is fairly minimal.

So far, I have only used submerged pumps and don't have the personal input on external pumps. One of my close friends mentioned having problems with several external pumps increasing water heat but the problem was gone once he used a less powerful internal pump. I know I should have read or researched more before posting this sorry for the error.

I could be wrong, but I don't think your sand bed can be able to withstand a Mag 950.

Vinh,

What about that Eheim you are selling? Bullet proof and reliable IMO and energy efficient too.

Just a thought.
