Okay, this cyano-bacteria is spreading in my tank. I've got my skimmer working properly again and have had this Phosguard in for 9 days. I've been changing it out every 3 days. Not doing the trick. I've read several posts about the chemi-clean. Is this safe for my tank? side effects? does it really work?

I just unleashed a wild pack of turbos on mine and they cleared it right up.

The only thing with the chemi clean is that it does not address the root cause of your cyano outbreak. If it's just a passing thing, maybe something died or there's a little cycle going on, fine. But if you have a chronic nutrient export issue, the cyano will just come back. Usually a combination of good skimming, growing some macroalgae in a refugium, and a really good sand bed population for detritus clean up will do the trick.

Turbos may shy away from cyanobacter unless its mixed with green and brown algaes. Micro blue leg hermits love cyanobacter. If you are using a skimmer and blowing water thru it at 1800 gallons an hour, that may be your problem. Some phosguard will leach aluminum into the water after 24 hours. Its effectiveness is really gone after that anyway. Cleanup critters and a refugium with macro like matt said will help. Cyano is part of the life cycle of starting a reef.

My tank has been up and running for about 18 months. Nothing has died that I know of. My skimmer got clogged up and stopped working for a while because I stopped checking it. I think it was for about two months. I don't want to put any crabs in. Richard at CB Pets told me not purchase a phosphate test kit because they don't test for all phosphates - just a waste of money. BTW this is my first cyano outbreak. I hope it's just a passing thing.

Happy New Year, Joe

Joe,

IMO the cyano is a result of your skimmer being down. Just start a schedule of regular maintenance on the skimmer, try minimizing the cyano by vacuuming it out, treat with Chemi-Clean and I think you should be fine.
