What is the best type of substance and technique for building acrylic tanks? What are some things to aviod?

Usually I just cough up some extra green dough and leave it to the professional.

Well, if you don't calculate correctly, it can crack from corner to corner. That causes a mess.
If you don't use the right cement and seal it, it can pop at the seams.
Study the engineering specs, pressure and spans for what you want to do first.
My first tank was running for about 6 months before it cracked diagonally. 125 gallons went thru the floor into the peoples place downstairs. What do you think was below? A full antique grand piano. I would avoid a situation like that.
