Ok I just walked into my room and was looking at my tank and I saw this weird looking head emerge from behind one of my clams and then i got closer and it came out a little more and sure enough i was a small mantis shrimp....maybe 1.5 inches. How do I cantch this thing. I'm not interested in keeping it around. Anybody have a good way to trap it? Thanks guys.

I know this isn't the coolest topic in the world but does anybody know how I can catch it? Has anybody else had one before?

Take a piece of shrimp and put it down a section of PVC pipe with the end capped. It wil go in after the food and you can cover the other end with a net and bring the pipe out. They are pretty smart so you will only get one shot at it. You can also find were it stays and bring out that rock, submerge it in Hyper or Hypo salinity water and it will jump out of the rock. If it isn't that nice of a rock then just dump it in fresh water for a few minutes. If you can see it hiding you can stab it with something thin like a skewer. Avoid touching it because it could hurt you.

I would try a small fish trap, but usually they are to smart for that one. If you can get to the rock that it is in drop it in fresh water and watch the little devil shoot out.

Or you could always try the skewer method.

I have a fish trap that I use, I set it in the tank for a few days, so he can get used to it, the I place some food in it and place it back in the same place. stand back and when he comes out of his hole to get the food and gets in the trap I let the door down, and out comes the mantis! If you need the trap to catch the little guy or if you catch min and wanna spare his life P.M. me and I'll take him off of your hands :D

I tried to capture my mantis for about 1mo, they are very smart. Do a web searh on mantis shrimp you'll be amazed. anyway I caught mine by taking the rock out and fresh water squirting . He now lives in his own 1/2 gal. nano tank ...very cool to watch and feed it is quite interesting.

I'll try to figure out where he lives first. Do they grow quickly? I'm hoping he won't have a chance to eat my peppermint shrimp or court jester goby...both only a little bigger than the mantis. yeah I thought about keeping him in another tank but I don't like the thought of feeding something that would try and eat me if I was smaller.

I think about that everytime I feed my cat.

I have a lime green one in my tank that I got as a hitch-hiker in some rock. Hasn't bothered anything so far. I may try to get him out and relocate him to my fuge if I can ever get the time to give it a shot. He was really cool looking the one time I saw him come out.

I have something in my 6 nano. Never seen it, just heard it. The only thing in there is a blue-green chromis and a few mushrooms and leathers. No noticeable problems yet.......
