I'm thinking about setting up a sump/refugium and don't plan on drilling a hole in my tank. Does anybody use a siphon type of overflow? I'm curious...what happens if the power goes out? Does it even lose siphon and overflow the tank? Anything I should be concerned with? I go out of town alot so I don't want anything problematic, and my tank is running fine as is but I just miss having a sump.

I use a hang on the back over flow unit. No it does not loose siphon when the power goes out. There are some things one has to be careful with in case the power does go off. Examples---backflow thru the return line can cause a water overflow in the sump! Will the pump restart after power goes on (ROI and Mags)!

Adam, you should be studying for your final and not dreaming up new ideas. Call me if you want to hear about the test.
I have a CPR and they arent all that great. About once a month or so the siphon will slow down due to too much crud and too many air bubbles. You normaly have a day or so to catch it becasue it is gradual in most cases. Obviously if you want to clean it every week or so you would be ok, but this would be a pain. It is hooked to a powerhead in the sump so that the air can get sucked out but the tubing occasionaly gets clogged. I have also had experience with the U tube and they are probably better overall. The slim line CPR looks better and does not take as much room but you may come home to a flood. In either case you can prevent flooding by setting a max line in your sump for top off. This way if the siphon did break you would be fine either way. I wish my tank were drilled. I won't make the mistake of buying another tank like it.

Yeah my old sump in another tank had a RIO pump...never again will I buy one of those. Well I appreciate the advice. Jim...what kind do you use. Also my montipora that I posted a picture of a couple of weeks ago that I said looked alot like yours is turning bright yellow w/ bright blue polyps. Hows yours doing?

Thanks Kyle. I've been enlightened. I think I'm just going to have to set up another tank or something to grow frags and keep coral rejects (those that I deem no long "cool enough") Thanks for the advice. I'm calling you about the test.

the cpr c-siphon overflows come with a 1/4" port to fit an airline on top of the overflow, this runs to maxi-jet, and removes the airbubbles that accumilate in the overflow. works great so far, the overflow stays clear of bubbles unless the airtube gets clogged.

Dan builds nice overflows; I think they're more reliable than the CPR ones. The ones with the best reputation are lifereef, but they're expensive (big surprise) I used one of Dan's on my old 29 gal, and it worked great.

I use a dual J--tube Lifereef copy overflow with dual outlets. On the return from the sump I use a Mag 18 hook into a SQWD. I have an exact overflow I am not using. You can have it.

Hey Jim. Whats an exact overflow? My tank is only 46 gallons so it might be too big. If not I'll definitly consider it, and thanks for being so generous.

Adam,
How big is the sump?
