well, right now i'm looking into turn over rates for a soft coral tank. the tank is a 50gl.

i want to purchase a cpr cyclone 192 combo, w/ scwd device for return.
the maxium flow rate for a 192 is 400gph.
a mag-drive 300 at 3' is 300gph, minus the 20% loss for the scwd device, which brings the turnover rate at 5x@240gpm
a mag-drive 500 at 3' is 380gph, minus the 20% loss for the scwd device, which brings the turnover rate at 6x@304gpm
a mag-drive 700 at 3' is 500gph, minus the 20% loss for the swcd device, which brings the turnover rate to 8x@400gph. the difference in pump price is $5.00, the 500 has 1/2" return, the 700 has 3/4" return...

what's the best choice?

peej, sometimes too much flow, isn't good thing. some soft corals aren't meant for high water flows. they come from different parts of the reef. corals that grow a skeletal mass in most cases, are from shallow water reefs and reef crest, were the water currents are more turbulent and faster flowing. a prime example are acros, they tend to grow in reefs like that, and produce a skeleton to withstand those effects. corals that lack skeletal mass usual grow in areas of gentler currents, and are not pressed up against the rock face, so they have no need for a hard skeleton like acros. so, since i want to set the tank up for softies, i'd like to do it right from the start.

I'm using the Mag 700 for my return with no SQWD and it doesn't cause too much turbulance for my softies, this is on a 75 gallon though. The Mag 700 is also 1/2 inch, they don't bump up to 3/4 until the 9.5 model, I double checked the info with drfosterssmith making sure they haven't changed them. I'm wanting to get a 9.5 and attach to a SQWD for a closed loop system at some point myself since they'd 'both be 3/4 inch.

if turbulence is a factor, just make several returns.

i talked myself into the cpr cyclone 192 combo and a scwd device... hopefully it'll be here sometime next week. i ordered it online thru premium aquatics. marine depot had a add-on charge for shipping the cpr cyclone, don't know why they did that...
