I've seen them and they are awesome...but I was thinkin something more formal...and I (my shop) could donate some awards (plaques, acrylics, etc). i thought that would be kind of neat

PeeJ -
It is a good idea and I think someone has brought it up in the past. As the others have stated, Jim and Tim have pretty much ruined it for the rest of us so we will have to find a way to only give them the award once! Definately a great idea though. We will have to talk about this during our next club management meeting :-)

Certainly. I've seen other sites that do contests. Perhaps there could be different contests to be judged each month?? like best acros, best clams...etc.

LOL, don't know if we are that big just yet to start breaking things out like that, but a tank of the month is definately possible. I know reefs.org has a tank of the month and has a contest for a certain topic every so often. The only bad thing about it is that some people have really nice tanks but don't have a way to take pics of them. They would have to have some nice person come and take pics for them. Even then, it comes down to the quality of the camera and the person taking the pics. A person could have awesome corals but only have a mediocre camera and the pics would not look as nice as someone with mediorcre corals and a good camera and picture taking capabilities. We will just have to wait and see how things go.

What if Tim and Jim are only allowed to win once per year.....? That would leave 10 more months of tanks. I think everyone should get the tank show cased. I can find something interesting in every tank I look at. No one has a bad tank.

Id like to know how Jim and Tim ruined it for the rest of us, Id put my tank up against anyones! Its not always about mass and volme, its about artistry and creativity along with a fluent understanding of the artform. Believe me, Im not saying that Jim and Tim arent outstanding examples of reefings true passion, but to say that they ruined it for others is crazy. It shows people an example of what can be achieved with some awareness and dedication.

OK, OK, JimD gets the 3rd month then! :-) No one said that only Jim and Tim would win every month, just that they have outstanding tanks that are far above what some of us are able to create. I think Mother Nature is the greatest artist of all with all the beautiful fish and corals we can put in our tanks. Creativity is ok, but can viewed in different ways. What if I was to figure a way to mount all my rock and corals to the top of the tank and have an upside down reef? Now that's creativity! We would have to look at the overall picture. Someone might not have a lot of corals or fish but may have a well layed out system and that could justify them winning. I like the idea of a tank of the month, but also simply like having the image galleries to show off everyones tanks as no two are the same and I know I don't feel the need to be "put on a pedestal" for everyone to see (not that mine would even come close to many of the great tanks some of our members have!)
Just my opinion though :-)

Thats cool, I just found the phrase "ruined it for the rest of us" a bit odd.

Yeah, I can see how that phrase is a little off in it's use. Makes it sound like we should take down our tanks and give up the hobby! lol. I think great looking tanks like theirs and the others that some of our members have give the rest of us something to strive for. It is nice to have someone tell you that you have a nice tank though, makes you appreciate all the time and effort you put into it. Our newly elected club leadership will definately look into setting up some kind of program to not only show off some of the great tanks around here, but also to share how those tanks are set up and maintained by their owners.

I rather like the phrase "artistry and creativity". Everyone's tank IS unique in it's own way, and choosing a "tank of the month" doesn't need to mean it's the biggest or has the most colorful SPS population. My little softie tank has been put together fairly well, I rekkon, and I've seen some others that have just blown me away! I really like the idea of featuring a different tank on a regular basis. It would be a great members perk too. And, just a thought mind you, we could save the "best of show" stuff for a future tank tour where members could use score cards to grade tanks in a variety of cool ways. Thankfully, size doesn't ALWAYS matter! :-D

When you figure out the upside down thing let me know so I can set up a cave dwelling tank. Tubastrea, carnations, and so on.

That would be very cool to make it look like a cave, bare bottom and a blue light coming up from below. Maybe a black light. I guess you could have a light above also to get the light beams through the cracks...........HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM.......... ...... Well, first I have to get this cube together. I am building an oak stand for it with a different concept. I'll get pictures when it is done.

I think Garf has some info about building caves and arches for cave corals out of aragocrete.
