Hi, this is Jessica and I'm house-sitting for Matt, but have no clue about aquariums. I checked underneath his massive aquarium after I fed the fish and noticed some water where it shouldn't be. There's this large cylindrical pump thing that swirls the water around very quickly then spits some out into this small plastic container. When he was showing me how everything worked together, he said that the water should just trickle out of the tube and eventually fill the container which I would simply empty out. When I looked under the aquarium, the container was over-flowing. I dumped it out, but it filled pretty much immediately and continued to do so for about 20 minutes. Now it's slowed and since I've been writing this it's only about 1/8 full of water. Should I be worried? Is this normal? Please assist.

well sounds like all that happened was the skimmer pulled alot of food out of the water into the collection cup which can happen. i'm not sure if matt shuts down the skimmer while feeding or maybe you added a little more than what he does. this usually happens during feeding time. if you have any major problems feel free to call me i've been over to his house before.

It seems that you are talking about the protein skimmer since you mentioned that you added food to the aquarium it does seem that the protein skimmer notice it and well it is removing all the extra proteins from it. Don't worry much you just either need to continue empting out the collection cup or just simply disconnect it for a bit until the food gets totally diluted in the water. Hope this helps and good luck with it just next time tell Matt to give you a phone number just in case something like this happends again.
