Don't you have to have a state permit to keep piranha's? I think you did at one time. You might just have to settle for their vegetarian cousins but they have a tendency to outgrow their tank. A fisherman caught a 6 lb. Pachu just outside of New Orleans when I lived there.

You could always take a road trip to Colorado to purchase the Piranha. My brother did that about 12 years ago, and brought him back in a styro-foam cooler.

It's the warm waters of the South that make Piranhas illegal. If ever release into a local stream, river, or lake, officials are afraid one piranha would dessimate the local fauna. No flushing down the toilet when it gets too big ;)

i could donate it to the maast raffle committee, or make it the next door prize..... hehehe(j/k!):skeezy:

garyp & saltyjim, i believe one would need a state permit for sure. maybe its something to look into on a whim. but, in reality, too long of a drive to get any, not worth the hassle in the long run. i had 4 rbp when i was livin in chicago. kinda miss not having them anymore. easy fish to care for. i est i bought close to 1500 goldfish when i was in college, they were all fed well. side courses consisted of chicken, shrimp, crab, catfish, algea eaters, steak, venison, ect....
but anyhow, this 110gl i'll picking up is about 7 yrs old, and i am wondering how much more life is actually left in the tank. i know silicon seals wear out over time, but how long do they normally last?

This is a little off topic, but does anyone remember the movie Piranha? Not a great movie but it was filmed in San Marcos at Aquarena Springs as I recall. Same basic idea, someone put some piranhas in the river and tourists were on the menu.

I knew a guy years ago, when I was a kid and into FW, that had a walking catfish. He had to have a premit from TP&W for it as well. They have big problems with them in FL. Of course they have a lot of problems with released exotics in FL. On the other hand, a few peacock bass in the Guadalupe might not be a bad thing. J/K.

My 125 glass tank was a gift around 1986. It has raised many salt water creatures, been moved from state to state while I was in the military, dropped from 4 feet to the ground on cement, sat out in the sun in the woods for two years empty, stolen, donated by the theives to a high school bio class, recovered, drilled, and it now sits with a real nice coral reef in it on a custom built stand. Our modern silicone has a 50 year warranty on the good stuff. I am working on calling their bluff. If this thing ever starts to leak, I'm plugging it! The only leak its ever had was with the newly installed dam for the overflow.

I've had my 110 for a little over 10 years now. Never seen any problem with it. Moved it over 6 times (what a pain in the a**). Recently drilled, praying to God it doesn't give out.

Now, on the otherhand, my Father has a 75 reef ready from Oceanic. One of the side panels was sliding slowly out of position. At that time, Oceanic had a 5yr warranty on the tank from defects. This was at about 8~9 years of ownership. He called, and they replaced the tank, and sent someone to Houston to do the transfer from bad tank to new. That's a deal!
