Everyone talked me into it so lets do it!
Give me your input---this is what I was thinking.
I will have a friend cherry pick all the clams that we order. I will buy them at wholesale prices :D
If you are a member then your price will be wholesale plus $5.00 which will be a donation to the club?

Count me in also Jim...I think the last maxima clam I got from you was 4" (??) at the last meeting at your house. I would like to get something like a derasa or squamosa - something I can put down lower in my 440 VHO so I can see & enjoy him. The prettiest of the two (derasa or squamosa). Are they available in colors or just gold?? And I would be more than happy to let you pick it out for me Jim if need be. Would just need to know some kind of a price I'm looking at...and how we can get them down here to SA for the people that order..

Thank ya! :D

I am in for two Maxima and two Crocea, and a Gigas if possible.
How are we going to divide the clams. I know that there are going to be some clams that are nicer than other. Do we take turn picking one at a time until it is gone? Number the clams then just pick out of the hat? (fairest) then just trade with each other if we want.
I want a really blue ultra Maxima and a Black and White Maxima. One tear drop one if possible.
For Crocea, just two beautiful ones.

I would be in depending on price. Like Josh, I would like a medium sized clam that doesn't have to be specially fed daily. Definately colorful as in crocea and/or maximas. Also interested in the time frame as I am fixing to spend money on my calcium reactor.

Tue, 4th Nov 2003, 09:38 PM
A thought!
I want to kept the sizes of the clams around 3 inches and bigger.
I would like everyones first wish then maybe a backup (incase the first cannot be filled).
Croceas, maximas and squamosas are usally in stock.
Minh we would really need some luck and prayes to get a gigas!
For example I will get two faxes tomorrow from two LA wholesalers then I will post what they have in stock. This will give everyone an idea of sizes and colors and types (maximas---ultra and color and croceas electric and 1st grade) and prices.

Okay Jim, count me in for one depending on what kind of time frame we're talking about. I won't have extra cash until Monday the 10th. I would like a bright blue ultra maxima with red highlights if possible. Second choice would be a black and white maxima. Let me know.

Minh, not that I want to part with it, but if you get another clam around 7 inch that I can replace it with I'll give you my gigas. You have treated this group, Jim, and I right so I'll do this for you. This is not an open offer, it is for Minh only. The gigas is burgandy with purple dots, and I'll probably kick myself later.

Tim,
I think I can get a really nice 6-8 inches Squamosa (My clam at a friend's tank). If I do get this I will tank a picture of the clam and see if you are willing to trade your Gigas for my Squamosa.

Thanks.

Wed, 5th Nov 2003, 11:30 AM
z28, you might want to do some research online about clams and find out which type of clam your system will support as far as lights are concerned as well as how large and and how fast they grow. I personally like maximas because they are usually smaller and slower growing than some of the others. They are more light dependent than some of the others though. I wouldn't get a maxima unless you have MH's.

I'd like a nice snakeskin patterned squamosa and a gold maxima. My maxima currently is looking much better but I had been holding off on adding any more clams in case the mantle pinching symptoms return - so far so good after 2 mos.

Will a Crocea be OK under 440 VHO lower in the tank? I have a maxima up high in the tank doing fine...if a Crocea would be OK...than I'll go for the 3" Crocea electric...if not I may need to stick to either a derasa or a squamosa...

BTW...what is scutes...an article states that the Derasa may develop "scutes?"

Sherri

GaryP
Wed, 5th Nov 2003, 09:41 PM
Scutes are the little fins on the side of the shell. In some species they wear off on older clams.

OrionN
Wed, 5th Nov 2003, 11:04 PM
Sherri,
You may wat to stay away from Crocea. They require very high light. They may live in your tank but you have them soo high that viewing them will be dificult.

Suggestions for a first clam under 2 250wXM's ... plenty of current in a 100 gallon? Very bright colors !!!

Triggerman
Wed, 5th Nov 2003, 11:37 PM
you'll have no problems since you have good lighting with housing a few clams. i say a few because there are way too many colors and paterns to pick a favorite. go with your ultra grade max. although 1st. grades aren't to shabby at all. i'm not fond of crocea's but that's just my opinion, i prefer my calms to have some decent size scutes on them.

Yeah Minh...I hadn't had Jim mention Crocea's to me knowing I had VHO's...was curious...I do have a maxima but high on the rocks out of a good view. He is doing great, but I can't enjoy viewing him totally.
OK, Jim, I want a 3" Squamosa COLORED if possible. 2nd choice of course, would be a 3" Derasa colored. :D Thanks...

Sherri

Jimnorris
Thu, 6th Nov 2003, 01:47 PM
ORA (Oceans, Reefs, & Aquariums, Inc.)
Minh at this time ORA does not have any ultra maxima clams over 2 inches. Also at this time they do not have any colored maximas over 2 1/2 inches. Also at this time they do not have any gold maxima clams over 2 inches. Also ORA does not offer crocea clams.
ORA is a great supplier of clownfish, corals and clams. Their prices on their clams are approx 45% higher than most wholesalers??????
So I will get my current update sheet (SeaDwelling Creatures) this monday then I will list it and we can make a group order.

Can you clam sit for me until Thanksgiving weekend if I go in on the order? I am headed out of town on the 19th and won't be back until the 25th. I don't want to get a clam and just leave town for nearly a week.

If so, I would like to get a 3" Maxima and a 3" electric Crocea. I like this Maxima too:

I'll take a 4in. crocea in green or blue, which ever is available at the time of selecting.

Flame angels are cheap right now, but they still are very difficult to get to survive as was being discussed under the "killer hitchhiker hermit" thread in the main forum. I picked up a nice and healthy looking flame at the new store here in S.A. only to have to slowly die a day later. Pretty much given up on flames now as I think the majority of them are doomed to death before you get them home.

Sherri,
Confirmation and change: Change from 1 Crocea to:
3 Crocea 3 inch all different colors of blues/blue purple. Just not a plain green.
I've seen some real nice 1st grades, so if thats how it comes out, great. I'd like wild patterns and combos.
Could have blue with gold, orange, whatever, as long as its not plain green. Either way, great or not, I'm in for 3 of the
3 inchers. Price I last saw was 15.95 each for that one.

Robert,
Maximas have Ultra (Nicest) and 1st grade ratings.
Croceas have Electric (Nicest) and 1st grade ratings.

Ultra maximas and electric croceas are just a little prettier than the 1st grade ones.
The ratings are set by the wholesalers, and everyone has their own opinion. So basically one guys Ultra might be considered 1st grade by a different wholesaler. Or this can work the other way around.

Guys and Gals,
There may be shipping mortality. We should add all of these and divide out (cost of ordering) so that Jim or the club will not eat the cost OK. If we order 6 fish for 100 dollars but one died then our cost should be 20.00 per fish not 17. Please don't complain if this is the case OK.

With the above warning from Mihn on possible losses on the group order, the following needs to be taken into account by all parties involved in this group order and all future group orders.

NOTICE
Unless otherwise noted by MAAST management, group orders are not sponsored by MAAST. They are solely the responsiblity of the person(s) organizing them and anyone joining in on the order. MAAST cannot be held responsible for any losses, damages, or other inconveniences that occur as this is solely an arrangement organized by club members on their own behalf.

the order will probably come in fine especially the clams, jim knows all about clams and shipping. the only problem i could see is with maybe the flames not on doa, but during the quarantine time. they are experiencing high mortalitiy rates with them in general, not to say these won't be o.k. it helps to know the origin of them or where they're being caught from.

Tim Marvin
Tue, 11th Nov 2003, 10:50 PM
Soooo, since Jim is Vice Pres were does that leave us? Management is not MAAST, we have just decided to help in decision making for the group. Every person here makes MAAST. That makes this a MAAST order no matter how we look at it. Let us just say that the parties involved in the orders must bear full liability, and not the group as a whole. I do see were you are coming from though. It just sounds like management IS MAAST and everyone else is just here, I don't want to be MAAST I want to be a part of it. Maybe it is just me, but it sounds a little harsh.

Instar

I agree to split the mortalities with the following stipulation: the fish buyers should split the mortality cost of the fish, and the clam buyers, the clam problems and each proportionately to the total $$ they spent for either clams or fish. I don't want to buy clams and pay for flame angel troubles. I will be happy to share the expense for the things I bought, proportionately. Example: If one clam dies and the clam buyers can't get credit, then the clam buyers split the cost of that proportionately. If it so happens that I am the one who doesn't get all the clams I bought because its one short now, then with this mortality split, as I understand it, I have agreed to pay for one less than I ordered and the group splits the cost of that dead one. That is ok with me. If half the flames don't look good or die, I'm not as cool about paying for them because I don't want these right now. Does that make sense? Whatever the group decides, either way, I am still a part of this all the way.

If flames are $13 dollars, you can bet they are being caught in masses if they sell a hot item for that price. Just exactly how do you think suppliers can get masses of angels? Ever been diving on a real reef? These have to have high mortalities because I can't see how anyone could dive in there and get a group of these things to swim out of their holes for netting. They have to be using chemicals of some sort unless they are tank rearing the fry. If they are chemical caught and starved during transport with salinity reduce, more drugs for disease proofing, they will have a very high percentage of mortality. These fish don't tolerate copper or formalin very well, amoung others. And they must have the correct diets in QT. If their needs are met, these are very easy to keep (decent water, etc.), providing they are not drugged or over medicated. With the mass quantities of fish being imported, much of the talent has been lost and all fish are getting dumped into copper because the wholesalers just aren't educated or doing a great job with the widely varing differences in demands of these fish. Perhaps Jim's connection is not one of those, but, how do we know?

OrionN
Tue, 11th Nov 2003, 11:35 PM
Sherri,
Count me in for four Flame angels so that we will order 12 instead of 11. (If there is another person who want it then I just take 3)
If any died, then I will take less.
Sorry about bring this last topic up, but I though that it should be said ahead of time, so that we won't hold anybody responsible. I am sure Jim will bend back ward to make everybody happy even at a loss to himself, but I don't want him to.
So how am I going to pay for this? I love to paypal somebody for the cost of the fish that I order.

Tue, 11th Nov 2003, 11:54 PM
Minh - it was actually a good thing you brought it up, especially as large as the order has become.

This is really for everyone's protection, especially Jim. He is a great guy and has at times given more of himself than he really should. This order is a great benefit to all those involved as doing orders like this are time consuming and can sometimes end up in a loss of money for the one organizing it. He only orders stuff from the best companies so it is unlikely that anything will happen, but it's better for everyone to be aware of and prepared for the chance there are a loss or two.

Tim Marvin
Tue, 11th Nov 2003, 11:58 PM
Very good point! There is nothing worse than doing an order and having to absorb a loss especially if there is 0 profit. Sometimes people will try to back out after an order has been placed also. Be absolutely sure you want something if you order it, and be ready to pay when it arrives.

Good job with the acclimation Jim! Crocea can get stress easily and gape. There are not gaping crocea in those pictures.

Thanks. I have learn that acclimating them first with actinic lighting for 24 hours works well!

I am not in on the clams, but as you can see, some are better than other, IMO. I think everybody should meet Saturday at 10:00 AM. The clams should be number. All number get put in the hat and draw for it. Of course Maxima should be separate from Crocea, separate from Squamosa. Who ever did not show up will get the lelf over. That is the farest way.

well what about us who cant make it then? that doesnt sound very fair to me. This should have been adressed before ordering. Just because I have to be somewhere and cant get out of it on Saturday, I should not get a fair chance at a good clam?

Different kinds and sizes. I don't really care. I think that it is great that Jim is not letting folks go by and put "dibbs" before Saturday! That has got to be difficult! I know how pushy we can all be!

What happens when you make a simple group order? You get over 230 replies and over 4,000 views ;)

I want you all to remember this is the first clam group order. There can always be a second. My idea behind this one is to let everyone who wanted a clam get one of the wonderful creatures at a GREAT price. After we learn (and I counted me in the we) we can really dial into being more detail on our choices. The majority here are trying clams for the first or second time. So what a great way to learn together :D

Because the old wise tale is very very true.

You just can't have one clam ;)

Jim
P.S. All of the clams in this order will make a wonderful addition to your tank!!!!!!!

Jim;

Did you order one of the maximas for me? I did request it, but have been out of touch for a week or so. I'll be happy to let others pick; I don't think I can make it on Saturday and I'm sure they're all beautiful. Just let me know if there's one for me, and I'll send some money with someone who's going up there from S.A.

Thanks again for ding this, i know how much time it takes

I beleive on Pg. 3 Sherri has posted what everyone wanted to order , this should be how the clams are given to the buyers

It's not that simple since there are multiple variations of the same color so if you order a green maxima there will be 10 green maxima's with diferent variations in color.

Okay, I went there, I'm on the list, but "needs confirmation" Soooo....I guess I'd like to ask anyone who's going from San Antonio to bring my money up there and pick me out a nice small maxima if there's one for me.

Thanks, Matt

I went and picked up my rather plain clams last night (Squamosa, derasa and hippopus) and the maximas they sent Jim were stunning - including a black and white tiger maxima.

Great order Jim!!!!!
Everything was better than I could have ever expected. Both clams look really happy sitting on their little ledge. The angel is still a bit shy, but has already eaten alittle sweetwater zooplankton.

What were you feeding the angles?

JT is one heck of a clam picker outer.

Thanks for all the hard work guys!

Hey....Thanks Alex for picking my clam up for me.....and Jim!! thank you for picking out my Squamosa. I got home late and lights were out, so I'll get a better look at him in the morning.

Really appreciate all the work put into making the order possible Jim... :D

I noticed there are a few that ordered that this is their 1st clam/clams. Maybe someone could mention where or where not to place these Maximas, Derasas & Squamosas in their tanks. (Bed or LR?)

Rule of thumb for the placement of giant clams in the aquarium.

Crocea-----on rocks
Maxima----on rocks
Squamosa-not on rocks
Hippopus---not on rocks
Derasa-----not on rocks

Rule of thumb for lighting requirements for giant clams.

Crocea-----metal halides
Maxima-----metal halides, vhos and pcs (very close to vhos and pcs)
squamosa--metal halides, vhos and pcs
Hippopus---vhos and pcs
derasa------metal halides, vhos and pcs

Please if anyone has any questions please ask!

Jim
P.S. Just took this picture thought it was different and birds eye view.
