Selcon has fatty acids, it is good for fattening fry up, but I wouldn't use it routinely. Just get a good quality food and mix up the diet with fresh seafood from the market and feed the tangs macro's they will do just fine. Variety is the key in my opinion.

You can, I use it every few months. It seems to do wonders for fish health from what I have seen. It is also good for your heart, so strain it yourself and use the rest in your food......LOL....

I used Selcon several years ago. I seem to recall that the fatty acids in Selcon will definitely make your skimmer go crazy. Its like adding soap to your tank but only lasts for a short time.

I have been considering starting to feed nori, possibly supplemented with selcon. Anyone have any experience with nori, either pro or con? If so, do you use the stuff from the LFS or from an oriental grocery store?

Joshua,

Did you just crumble it up and feed it like flake, or hang it on a clip?

I prefer Vita-chem as a vitamin supplement, seems to make a difference IMO. It just contains vitamins and seaweed extracts. I only use it on the food and would not add it directly to the tank as the directions recommend unless you have a sick or injured fish. Zoe and Selcon are pretty much the same thing. I think selcon contains vitamins and HUFA's whereas Zoe is just HUFA (Highly Unsaturated Fatty Acids). Foods such as mysis shrimp and cyclop-eeze contain high levels of HUFA's so if you are feeding these there really is no reason to supplement further.

I have been feeding caulerpa from the fuge and a variety of foods and never had Hole in head or lateral line on any of my tangs. I have been keeping tangs for years with no problems.

I concur with Tim. Understand that many of the hyped products are to catch the aquarist and don't do much for the fish. I have Selcon but don't use it much. Claims are it has things in it, but, it looks like milk extract to me. Since its not labeled with contents, I don't place much value in it. Can't track or calculate what is in there without doing some really expensive tests. I do use live caulerpa, a wide variety of dried and frozen foods and seachem vitamins (Reef Plus). My tangs et al, They are beautiful and I've had them years. You can order Selcon from DrsFosterandSmith.com as well as a lot of other things at cheeper than the LFS prices (except food and light fixtures). I used garlic extract once to get my newly arrived, parasite ridden, copperbands started on prepared foods. Makes the whole place smell like garlic.
