What is the difference between a tank raised and a wild clownfish? Is one better than the other?

Exactly what is says. A tank raised clown is bread in captivity. Tank raised specimens usually command a higher price but are worth it because they have higher survivability rate than wild caught clowns

Tank raised Clowns are superior in color and healthy than the wild caught clowns, especially the clowns that were raised by the comercial breeders.

Thats assuming the breeder can tell the difference between the species. But You know what they say about assumtions, they are the mother of all fubars.

There is a difference between "tank raised" and "captive bred" in this hobby. There are many species that are tank raised. This is accomplished by dragging a seine over reef areas and collecting eggs or fry and then taking them to an island facility right on the beach and reering them up to sell. Captive breed means the adults are in breeding tanks and the eggs and babies are 100% captive raised, no reef contact at all. Those don't deplete the reef populations like "tank raised". If you see "tank raised" on tangs, those came from dragging the reef. On clowns it usually means "captive breed". In the end, if they were handled correctly, all the tank raised strains would be free of disease parasites like oodinium and do well for you. Touble is wholesalers get them, they are mishandled, not fed, then dumped into a trash can for a quick acclimation at a local store, fed something they are not accustomed to and get sick. What I've seen in around here is pathetic and in poor shape. I know we have a couple of reps with stores who are members of MAAST. I would do business with them or a member if at all possible. The point is, be careful of the term "tank raised" as its very loosely applied.

Kaiser,
The breeder knows their fish for sure. It is the LFS that does not know their stuff, often they don't really care. I am sure that your Ocellaris did not come to the LFS lable as Percula.

Actually I went back to the store where I bought them and talked to the Owner. She turned around and talked to the Wholesaler in Dallas. He stated that he gets them from a breeder in the Dallas area as TRUE PERCULAS. What they are banking on is the fact that all the books say that none of the differences between the two is conclusive. In short somebody in the Dallas area that breeds clowns is the biggest clown of them all.
