Thanks Chris for the help! This tank has come along way since the last time everyone has seen it. It when from totally way to high tech to very low and easy to keep low twch. So I will share my VERY simple way of keeping a tank like this. What do you all think?

Jim - will you have any clams and/or corals for sale? Also will you have some of your special clam and coral diet available? I would like to try another clam and need something to feed my corals.

As I said before ... beautiful tank, nice job and any advice is always helpful. I too would be interested in a clam if they will be available.

I saw Jim's tank in person about 5 weeks ago. It's awsome looking. Not too many empty spot. The tank is full of corals, SPS, LPS, leathers, ricordea.
Jim,
Has that green tree leather I traded you split into two separate trees yet?

Vinh,
I haven't split that kenya tree yet. ;) It is getting rather large (hint).
I was not planning on selling any corals???
I was planning on giving members maybe their choice of a frag or two right out of the tank? And I have all types of corals!!!!!
I am also planning on setting up a SCWD on a separate tank so everyone can see (and touch) what a great item it is!
There are some more great items I am planning on doing and will complete them this weekend and list them.
If you are interested in clams then lets do it!
And Vinh still one of my favorite creatures is that redorange flower anemone!

I want to take a gander at your tank again - I'm going to take a few hours off to show up for the meeting.

FYI - those ultra orange flower anemones are back in stock at reeftopia again.

Jim, what are the lighting requirements for the clams. I really like the looks of the blue maxima.

Jenn,
The general rule on a maxima MHs are needed. But there are acouple more factors that will help. One and clam needs to be fed. And nirates?????? Also the size of a maxima clam is a factor too. What type of lighting are you using?

I too like the Maximas so ....
And nirates?????? Also the size of a maxima clam is a factor too. Nitrates ??? Size ???

Jimnorris

Size---A clam over approx 3 inches requires more lighting less food. And a clam under 3 inches requires more food than lighting---a general rule of thumb. I have a maxima that did not have any light for about 6 months but had plenty of food and is alive this day! Ammonia nitrates are supplemented by clam farmers to enhance their growth. That actually filter the nitrates!!! A great way to filter you tank!

Thank You ... so a Maxima under halides will reduce my nitrates and do well if fed properly.

Jim, right now I have just plain flourescent lighting. With the tank I am upgrading to, I am looking to purchase a IceCap 430 with 3 bulbs, think I can do a VHO setup w/ this, but still learning. Also going to get a 6' pc setup that can run 12 - 55w pcs. Like I said, I have a lot to learn, so that's why I am glad you replied. I can't wait to make this meeting and learn some great stuff!

Jenn,
IMO one of the greatest features about this hobby is there is always something to learn! If you want before you upgrade your lighting we can talk about what type of tank you want (what you keep in it). This will then determine which way to go with your lighting.
There are so many wonderful members in this club that you can pool the best information and then put it to use.

Ron Williams is putting together a tank tour before and after the meeting. This is a brillant idea! Because there are many ways to set up a tank and by seeing many different styles (ways) this will enable you to decide on what kind of tank you want. And then you will have your very own style!!!!

My maxima I got from Jim (June??? meeting) is doing great under 440 VHO - although I do have it sitting high on the rocks for max light.
BTW Jim...since I do have VHO, what type of clam would I have a better chance at putting down lower in the tank so I can see him in plain sight?! And, would you be having any of those at the meeting? hint hint I would prob want one if so. :D

Maybe i can get my first coral! I am getting my b-ionic in the mail this week and a couple bulbs and 2 more set of endcaps for my icecap 660. I don't have the canopy built yet so is there anyway to have the new vho's sitting above the tank. Could i just set them on the glass?

I think Chris only has galleries set up for people that have paid for thier memberships at this time. Once you have done so, you just click on the image gallery section and find the folder with your name on it under the Maast member section.
If you just want to post a pic or two on a thread I think you can do so if you hit "Post Reply" rather than using the "Quick Reply" section.

I'm thinking of a squamosa, right, Jim? Lower in the tank under 440 VHO? Aren't these gold in color?

Sherri,
A squamosa or a dersas would be fine. Also I never had any problems keeping maximas with vhos or pcs. I place them very close to the lights and fed them (IMO).

I'm having no problem with my maxima at all Jim. And he is being fed with your clam & coral diet. I just want another clam! hehe But this time I would like one that I could keep lower down in my tank where I can see it better. Where can a squamosa or dersas be placed under 440 VHO? :D

hey sherri where did you get the clam and coral diet, also is it better than the DT's they sell now at alamo, i recently got a maxima and now i want to see what i can feed it to make sure it stays healthy, looks very good for being in my tank 1 day now, 1 more question should i leave it on the sandbed or place it higher on the rock, she seems very happy on the sand, she's wide open, let me know and thanks for any help!!!

DT's is a live algae culture which some believe is better. Clam and Coral Diet is a blend of differrent types of algae that was developed with the help of Jim to provide better results, last longer due to having to feed less, and be less expensive than DT's. As far as which one is better for you to use, it really is a personal preference. Some people only use one type while many others use both, alternating between uses. Jim has some Clam & Coral Diet for sale from time to time and you can also find it online at instant-algae.com.

As far as the clam's placement goes, it depends on the type of clam. Jim can give you a better answer on that subject.

Oceancube....I got the Clam & Coral Diet from JimN - don't know, but he may have some at the meeting. I'm very pleased with it. As far as placing it...(I may be wrong), but I don't think maximas go on the sandbed. Jim??

I know that a bunch of people put a piece of live rock under the sand bed. That way the Maxima will attach to the rock and can be easily moved. Especially if you have a shallow sand bed you should do this. Just make sure your maxima does not attach to the glass floor of your tank.

Other than that, I think the only issue is just making sure it gets enough light.

Everyone that does not know, or just forgot, go check out the clamsdirect forum. I added it to the MAAST web links. ;)
