Has anyone else tried growing nori? I put some into my nano tank just to experiment. this stuff grows as well or better than some of the Caulerpa in the same tank.

This is the stuff from the asian food market off of bandera, roasted seaweed. I put a small piece in the tank just to see what would happen and this stuff has turned into a head of lettuce.

I know I was suprised too. If I can get some pics I'll post them. Pretty cool though, guess I won't have to buy anymore nori.

Hey Dorthey, Your not in Kansas anymore!
It is not possible that the dried nori grew! It is more likey that the nori rotting in your tank caused hair algea to grow to the size of a head of lettuce. The other possibility is that the nori expanded and is now rotting in your tank and releasing alot of nasty nutrients to feed other algea.
Anyway dried nori will not grow.

Trust me it's not rotting or just swollen with water. This stuff has actually grown.

Just kidding with the sarcasm. We've all been there.

Can you describe or characterize in detail this growing "stuff", if not the only way we will get to the bottom of this, I fear, is with pictures.

Henry, is this stuff green? is filamentous or leafy? how wide are the leafs if there are any? Is it attaching to rock? Do the fish eat it ? do the crabs eat?

Hey do you think if I put some nori on my head and took a shower I could grow a new coiff? This could be life changing.

This stuff is green, very leafy and it does attach to the rocks. The leaf I just pulled out is about 6-8 in square. My regal and yellow tangs love it. I don't have any hermit crabs, just snails.

Matt,
If that works we'll market it and become billionaires.
Henry,
I'm very perplexed with your description. The dried nori you used-are you sure it was dried nori?, and was it pressed into a square or was it in its natural "leafy" form? I think pictures are indicated. I will wait with child-like anticipation.

Due to lack of camera at this time, this is a link that I found which pretty much matches what I pulled out of my tank. http://seaweed.ucg.ie/cultivation/NoriSummary.shtml

I don't know, but that looks like what a square dried sheet of nori might look like after sitting in your tank a few days. Like I said, I don't know.
Sorry.

Would be amazing if it's actually growing - not sure if you have ever seen Ulva algae but it looks a lot like nori only a greenish color.

I think it would be very hard to grow nori since most hobbyists don't have the resources to keep seaweed happy, the requirements would be too demanding....

not to mention this stuff is dried and dead. that would make about as much sense as my leftover scrambled eggs turning into chickens
