It is the same percula clown you see in most pet stores except they have thick black out lining intstead of thin out lining.

Since I didn't hear back from You I went and picked up the Percs. Here is a picture. Now before we have another lengthy discussion about the species, please keep in mind that these guys are only about 1"in length. They are not even juvies yet, but I couldn't help myself when I saw them at the store.

Kaiser - Where did you get them? I have seen true percs that small and they have more black than that. Many LFS sell the Ocellaris species under the name of Percula Clownfish. I'm not sure if this is because they don't know the difference or just don't care as they will sell anyways. I know this as I spent a couple of months trying to find TRUE perculas here in S.A. inorder to replace one that died from my pair. It was very frustrating!

I got all of mine from Darbys Tropicals In New Braunfels. Like I said these 2 are just Babys. I will try and get some better pics of them later.

Minh,
do You have a failsave way to tell the 2 apart? We had this same discussion here http://www.maast.org/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=2296<br>
Whatever they are they host in a sebae anemone, Which is unlikely for A.ocellaris.

I don't know of any laws of nature that state what clownfish must host in what kind of anemone. There may be certain tendancies, but nothing is for sure, especially when you are dealing with tank raised fish that haven't seen an anemone until you put them in with one in your own tank. Again, many stores sell the A. ocellaris under the common name of percula clownfish. The variance of the black area around the white stripe is the main thing that helps distinguish the two. A. ocellaris has a thin black line bordering the white strips. A. percula has a jet black border area that is wavy and often connects between two white stripes.
Now you say your pair is young and small, but even in that size you should see more black markings than that. As I stated earlier, I spent a couple months looking in LFS for true percula clowns. I would have to say that 90% of the time they mislabel the A. ocellaris species as "Perculas" and even "True Perculas".

kaiser,
There are a variety of things you can look for none is 100%. Here are a few that I use:
1. Dorsal fins are shorter in P vs. O
2. Ray count 9-10 in P vs. 10-11 in O
3. Middle Bar have nibble like shape in P vs O
4. More black in P vs O
5. Smaller and grow slower in P vs O
6. General shape narrower in P vs O
All in all, commercial tank raise clowns are easy to tell apart because the commercial breeders selected and exacerbated the differences of the two fish species.
What you have are two tank breed A. ocellaris. They are not even looking close to A. percula
They are beautiful. Very bright orange and is perfect in shape. No deformity in mouth (commom) I would be very happy to get such perfect, bright color specimens like that.

I tend to agree with Minh. Great looking fish though! I told you just get what you want and don't worry about the species. True, False, Perc, Ocellaris, makes little difference. Looks like you got what you wanted so don't worry about it. Just call them "clowns". Big, fat, healthy clowns!

That might be all well and good, but if I go into an LFS to buy some fish I would expect to get what I've paid for, rather than what they want to call it. It just ****es me the hell off, because I specifically asked whether these are true percs or ocellaris. Oh well I guess I took it up the rear on this one.
Please excuse the language.

hey kai , well thats why i didn't get them cause i can tell the difference, she told me they were tank raised true perculas and i was like are you sure, she then told me "i guess thats what they send them to me as", so i dont know, but hey, wth, there in the anemone and they look happy, who cares, at least there not hosting the dumb powerhead or algea :-D !!

They are very beautiful fish. The most important factor in this case is that they accepted your anemone as host. This is not always the case in many tanks. Although not absolutely need, clowns/host interaction is very interesting, much more so than just have clowns.

They usually run about the same price anyway. I bought a bunch from ORA a while back and the only difference in the true and false I could see was the jaw line.

Doesn't ORA usually charge $4 more for the true percs. It is only 3-4$ but I would be ****ed too if I got ripped off like that. I would ask for my money back in fish credit if I were you :o

I don't know if I would be ****ed off about it, but maybe dissappointed. It is very common for them to be labeled incorrectly. I'm with Minh though, if they have already hosted in your anemone, I would be happy. I love watching my clowns and how they interact with their anemone. Sometimes it's like they can't get close enough to it! Amazing the anemone puts up with them sometimes. Again, just be happy with them that they are healthy and hosting. :-)
