View Full Version : Elegance, brown jelly or slime?

I've been trying to keep an Elegance Coral for about a week and a half now and it doesn't look real great. Every morning he has sort of a brown slime or brown stringy matter floating over him, while being attached to him, which is how Albert J. Thiel describes brown jelly disease. I blew it off with a turkey baster the other day and it looked pretty good that day. Yesterday I did a Lugol's dip and it didn't look as good all day. I've heard that the Logol's dip is pretty strong and you shouldn't have to do it more than once or twice.

Could I be worried about normal slime? How do you tell the difference? The material is mostly whitish with some brown in it. I'd hate to think that I'm stressing out this coral creating slime, then treating for slime by stressing the coral!

It has a small area where it's separating from the corallite. About 3/8 of an inch. This area has not gotten bigger in about four days.

Any comments?

Rocketeer,
I have tried and tried to keep elegance corals and have failed every time. I do not know many that have been able to keep them? I believe they come from the bottoms of the reef and require some special condistions? But then again that does not mean it cannot be done.

elegance corals rarely fare well and always seem to succumb to the brown jelly disease. since you did the dip you just have to play the waiting game. i've found them best to keep around med. to high water flow especially during the stage of the slime.

Most people that I know who have successfully kept elegance corals bought them before they were transferred into lots of different holding tanks before they are sold. I think the stress from shipping and exposure to too many different environmets is what does them in. Most of the ones that are sold are already on their way out.

There is a LFS in So. Cal that has had great success with these corals. They said the main issue is light, but there must be more to it than just that. I've seen them personally keep about 3-4 more than 6 months. By the way, the shops name is Fish Collection.
