I did some research and asking around before I got my Eheim 2026. Eheim is supposed to make some of the best canister filters. They are very efficient. The 2026 is very simple to use and is super easy to start up and to clean.

IMHO, Marineland Rule! The Marineland. canister come with those the diatom filter to polish your water as needed. Eheim are now made in China, look around for cheaper Chinese knock-off on ebay. I have never tried Eheim or Fluval, but I have bought the replacement part for Eheim, they're expensive stuff. I paid about $35 just for the replacement hose&return tube & spray bar. When I need replacement part for Marineland product, they mail it to me for free (or at least they did that 3 years ago after I've just bought the unit new from Petco.)

Eheim is expensive because they are quality products. Not always the best on certain things, but they do make good products. In the case of canister filters, they are some of the best. They have some of the best ratings on water filtered instead of just passed through. Only advantage to Fluval I see is that you can buy the stuff for it at Petsmart or Petco. For the Marineland stuff, I've used the Magnum 350 before and now have a HOT unit to run carbon and such when needed. They work alright, but are a pain to clean in my opinion.

I've had a fluval 404 and two 304's. The first 304 started leaking from the top seal, and couldnt get it to stop for the life of me...The second 304 was the replacement for that one, and it had the new style quick disconnect for the hoses, which I wasnt too thrilled with(Its automatic flow stop, the old one had a valve you could use to regulate flow) I never had a problem with the 404, other than it was a PITA to prime and sometimes it was hard to get the quick disconnect into place.
If I get another canister filter, I will either go eheim or rena. My buddy has an XP2 on his Piranah tank and just loves it... Also, he says his magnum is crap compared to the Rena....
BTW, what are you planning on doing with it? Is it going to be the main filter or just for mechanical or just to run carbon?

It will be used as a mechanical filter and to run carbon once in a while.

Have you decided which one you're going to buy yet?

That sump that you got from me. You can put "Poly Fiter" over the eggcrate shelf to absorb bad chemicals from your tank.

Great choice on the eheim. They are very good quality products. I'm thinking of using their new power heads instead of maxijets.

Yeah, I'm very happy with the quality of their canisters, well worth the extra $50 bucks.
