I am looking at the different float switches/water level controllers to hopefully put an auto top off set up on my sump. Looking for your input and experiences.

Thanks for your help! :D

Chris;

As you might have seen on my tank, I'm using an elecric float switch in conjunction with a solenoid for my top-off. I got them both at McMaster-Carr , following a DIY post on reefcentral. I use it on a timer; basically, the timer turns on the solenoid twice a day for an hour, which allows water to flow directly into my R.O./D.I. filter, then to my sump. The float switch shuts off the solenoid when the level gets high enough, if the timer hasn't yet shut it off. It works great, but all sorts of people have warned me that it will fail at some point and I'll have a flood. so, I'm adding a second solenoid between the filter and the sump. Then, there's a back-up for each component.

I can hunt for the McMaster-Carr part # if you want. Most people just use the mechanical float switches, I think.

Lifereef make the best floatswitch($120.) Tunze Osmoregulator is pretty good as well( about $165 for the base model kit.)

I had ordered one similar to the one JimD is using. I had it hooked up to a Rio 600 for top off but it failed before I even got it installed in the sump. I decided I'd rather use a dosing pump when I can get one since it might be little safer. I found this site that has decent prices.

Brewer, can you offer a little detail on "it failed before I even got it installed in the sump"? I dont understand how the switch could have failed prior to usage. I must be missing something here.
Thanks
