Have had xenia spreading really well up until a couple of days ago. The have all closed up. They still seem to be pulsing but not very much they look like closed fists. Any ideas the tank has not changed perameters are the same.....

Could be a lot of different things. Xenia are really ph sensitive, that would be my first guess. Remember that corals are usually a better indicator of water parameters than most test kits, so you could have some changes that don't register on the kits, but are still there.

also, sometimes xenia just close up for no apparent reason, then open up in a few days. Another thought is if you've added any corals recently, especially sarcophyton, they could be reacting to the presence of new chemicals. These are just guesses.

What type of xenia. When my temp went over 86, my Pom Pom closed up and was releasing something in the water, but the elongata was not affected.

About 2 months ago, my elongata pretty much died off except for two frags which are coming back now. Not sure what happened, but the Pom Pom was thriving while the other was dieing. Not sure what caused it, possibly low Iodine, cause I hadnt done a water change for a while, and wasnt supp. iodine in that tank. Everything else was fine though..

all i really have done was top off the tank. although it was declorinated (my spelling sucks) tap water, i have done this many times. Pop pops are doing great but the others are not looking too good. This is the only part of the hoby that gives my wife any pleasure and dying xenia would really suck......

mine were doing the same thing last night...looked like a bunch of fists...also noticed that the base had puffed up about twice the normal size. took a look at it tonight and it's as beautiful as ever fully extended and pulsing. i don't know what the difference ...

Try doing a water change. That will add iodine, and other trace elements in the salt, that your tank could have used up...

If you're not using halide or VHO, xenia should usually be placed in the upper reaches (top third, to quarter of tank, should suffice). They seem to prefer fairly intense lighting, one of mine moved towards the surface on rock(from mid tank level - my tank is 17 inches deep), and another almost "melted" before I discovered it, moving it up, and is making a comback.
