I setup my new 6'x2'x2' 180g tank on Saturday and moved my 45 pounds of LR, two 2" clowns, snails and crabs and live sand to the new tank from my old 30g. Obviously the bio load is REALLY lite for such a large tank (boy are the two clowns having fun).

How should I proceed to build this tank up? Should/could I add livestock to this tank now or should I wait? Should I beef up the LR first (maybe add 100 or 200 pounds)? Since I moved everything from my 30g, all of the bacteria, etc etc moved with it obviously. Should I leave the two clowns alone for a while to break the tank in or...since it's the same bio load as before, just more water (and the 4 mangrove plants in the refugium), can I add a tang or two now?

Advice anyone?

NOTE: One factor to consider is that we are moving to Europe in 2 years. We don't want a huge livestock investment that we'll have to dispose of when we move. I'm thinking of keeping it basically to a fish only tank for the most part but I do have VHO lights.

I would agree with Josh. I would also suggest adding additional live rock slowly, unless it has been fully cured otherwise it could cause you tank to cycle again. good luck and show us some pics.

I'd look for a lot more sand. There was a place in Austin that had several bags of Southdown; there was a recent post about it. You could easily put 300 lbs+ of sand in this tank. Then you could use your existing sand to help seed the bed, maybe add some more rock, and get some sand from a few established tanks. But definitely get a good sand bed going. You'll have no problem selling the sand when you move; seems like everyone's looking for S.D., especially from an existing tank.

Just my 2 cents

I got 300 pounds of Aragonite from tropical fish haven when I bought the tank and added the live sand I had in my 30 gallon so I think I have enough. I'm getting ready to drive up to Austin to get some LR from Tim Marvin. This is pretty exciting.
