Anyone know if those faucet mounted tapwater filters sold at Lowes or Home Depot remove chloramine and reduce the amount of TDS? Just curious.

I think most of those types of filters just use carbon so they should remove chlorine/chloramines and some organics, and metals. They won't remove things like phosphate, silicate etc. RO or DI water would be much better.

I purchased one just to test it, and returned it. They dont work for what we need.

Most petstores sell a Faucet mound DI filter. I've been using it for a while, and it seems to do Ok. Kinda expensive in the long run though. $40 for the filter and 24 for cartridges. You get about 100G per cartridge...cs

witecap,
How many cartridges do you get for the $24? Just curious since it may be best bet for what I need rather than hauling water all the time.

You only get one, and it makes about 100G if you do it all at once, if you run a 5gal here and there, you'll probably get 50G or so. I've never really tested it. I can say though, my tank looked better than when I was using bottled water from Walmart. I think in the long run, it would be cheaper to get a RO/DI though, and I will probably be doing that down the road a little.

Thanks for the info. Maybe better to just lug the water jugs around unless I can find a good deal on it, maybe I'll check ebay.

Thanks,
Cliff

Petco and Partners has them, and maybe petsmart, but im not sure on that. I got mine at partners, i think their a tad cheaper than petco, unless you can get someone to give you their discount...cs
