I've been having a little trouble with a maxima clam that I have. Jim N I would have PMed you for advice but I figured others could benefit from any discussion on this topic. I started off with a great high quality clam from Jim, and until recently it has been doing well. I have plenty of lighting, and have been monitoring Ca, Alk, and doing regular water changes. I have other clams in my tank that are doing fine as well as some sps frags that are growing nicely. This tank has been running for over a year. The clam is basically not opening as wide as it used to and the mantle stays sort of tucked into the shell. It basically looks half open or less, all the time. I think that some sand might have gotten into it either from a goby sifting right on top of it, or because of a large squamosa I have closing rapidly nearby, possibly forcing sand to land on top of, and inside it. Other than this I have no idea what could be causing the problem. I can say that from what I can see the clam still has good color. I am not an expert on clams so I'd love some help. I do feed the tank with DT's, golden pearls and baby brine, and the tank is lit with one 250 XM, and a 75w VHO super act R. Temp is between 78 and 81. Is there anything I can do for it other than move it to higher ground to avoid sand?

Youre not serious about the goby dumpin sand on the clam are you,,,, Ill assume you are,,,, thats why your clam is unhappy, either get rid of the goby or move the clam higher on the rock and hope it stays there. Sand can kill a clam!

Sand will clog the clams gills and then he will die. :(

I was serious about the goby, but it wasn't dumping sand into the clam, it is a really small goby so only a tiny bit of sand, but I'm pretty sure some got in. Who knows since I'm not able to watch the tank all the time. I'd already moved the clam prior to posting so the sand problem is gone, but it may have already done too much damage. Is there anything else I can do? Can the clam somehow force out the sand? Thanks for your help.
