and no other filter? I am having problems with my wet/dry and I am considering just replacing it with a Aquac C Remora.

What are the groups thoughts on this?

That's how many reefers run their tank. Skimmer, liverock, and good circulation.

Lisa,
I have personally used the Remora skimmer (both regular and pro). IMO it is a very fine skimmer.

I have quite a few customers that are using the Red Sea Prism Skimmer on tanks smaller than 100 gallon. They seem to like it fine as a less expensive alternative to other units. Some have mentioned the noise created by the pump breaking up the bubbles, but they appear to get used to the noise in short order. I just fired one up in the store to play with, and it appears to make micro-fine bubbles.

I am not at all thrilled with the Prism. I have to keep the flow turned almost all the way down, or it will fill the cup in a matter of minutes. Also, I dont like the bubbles in the tank, and haveing to prime it is a PITA, as mine has lost its siphon(if thats the correct term) a couple times due to the flow being turned down.

As far as noise goes, it squeels with the flow turned down, but the motor noise isnt that bad compared to some, and having the air tube go into the waste cup is a good idea, and you dont get that venturi noise. I'd pick my bakpak over my prism any day though...

For someone willing to spend a little extra cash, there is nothing wrong with a bak-pak from CPR. I ran one for a few years on various sizes of tanks. I believe part of the reason they limit the Prism to 100g or less might be the flow issue. It does operate best on a lower setting. I have not noticed a squeal, but I will listen closer tomorrow. I just received a motor from the rep, as mine was broken in shipping.

If you have a sump and the space i recomend getting a turo eductor it has worked great for the last 5 months.
i did have a mag drive pump for my pond kit on it and that was alittle loud but i have recently hooked up a mag 7 and all the noise went away.
i have to empty the cup once or twice a week but i only let a inch or less of skimate build up at a time..

I'm using an Urchin which is the in sump version of the remora. This is the absolutely the best skimmer I've ever used. I've used a Berlin Turbo, CPR back pak, and a few others. The Remora/Urchin uses a spray injection instead of venturi. With the venturi skimmer, I had to clean the venturi every two weeks to keep the skimmer consistent. It's been since January since I've touched anything other than skum cup on this skimmer.

I like it a lot... low maintenance ;-)

Same here Bigreefer...I am using the AquaC Urchin Pro Sump Skimmer also. It'll be a year in August and I think it's doing great. It is low maintenance...All I have to do is clean the scum cup also.

I can can enough good things about my Euro-Reef skimmer.
I used no other filtration except DSD/LR/refugium.
I have 4 large fish in my SPS dedicated 180...No problem.

Many tout the virtues of skimmer-less...However...skimmers have worked for me for years.

I have used CPR BakPaks for a long time now and I think they are a great skimmer for smaller tanks. You have to option to put some bio filtration in it if you want or just use it as a skimmer. The only problem is that you do have to clean out the venturi and that is a minor pain and for some reason the stupid Rio pump doesn't want to come back on sometimes. My next skimmer will be the AquaC Remora.

I've been using an urchin on my 45 for about a year. Definitely get the maxijet upgrade; it works way better. In fact, I'd think about an urchin pro with the mag 3. I borrowed an EV120 for a while, and it pulled way more junk than the urchin on the same system, and my tank looked better. (it's pretty heavily stocked with sps) So the urchin pro would probably do better in the long run, because you can run it with a better pump. Just my 2 cents.

I pulled out my my bioballs and all mechanical filtration from my wet dry filter about 3 weeks ago. Not only have I not had any problems with ammonia/nitrite but my ORP has gone from around 260 - 270mv to 380 - 390mv. Right now it's reading 393mv and is still increasing daily. I've also noticed a big reduction in algae growth. So I recommend doing it. I am using an AquaC EV120 in my sump and no other form of filtration other than lots of live rock.
