Hey guys...I've got a Iwaki 960gph Circulation Pump on my 100gal that is making a grating noise. I don't know if I'm supposed to be cleaning this guy periodically or not. I don't know how to get INTO IT. I don't want to break any seals of the PC valve coming out of it.
Just wondering if anyone is familiar with this unit & can instruct me into getting INTO it. Don't know if it needs cleaning or needs a replacement part.
Any help would be muchly appreciated.

Open the front screw by the white plastic part and check for loose debris inside. While you're at it, install some true union valve on your plumbing if you haven't done so.

I took out impellar, cleaned & put back together...The noise is still there...apparently in the motor part of the unit. Does anybody know of an Iwaki dealer around here anywhere? I got the unit last August.

Sherri,
Sorry; don't know any dealer. One question, though: did you get the impeller out of its white plastic sleeve? Any did you soak all the parts in vinegar or some weak acid for a few hours or a day?
You should be able to plug in the motor (after everything's disassembled) and test whether the noise is there. No, this is not an approved UL use of the pump, but if you're careful with the electricity you can learn for sure whether you have a pump motor problem or not.

No Dean..I didn't soak the parts...I took them out (including impeller out of its sleeve) & just scrubbed with a toothbrush real well...I have already assembled it back, then plugged it in & the noise was still there.

Disassembled again & turned on motor - the noise is in the motor - not impeller. :|

Try calling iwaki. I think the website is iwakiwalchem.com
They're in the Boston area, I think. Also, if you got it in August, it's still under a year old; it's got to be under warrantee.

Hey Matt...already did ;) , got the # off the unit itself. Shipping a new unit today (overnight) - still under warranty. Charging me, but will credit when they receive the defective unit back. Not a pretty sound tho in my house. A little "grating" on the nerves. Just as long as it keeps pumping till the other gets here tomorrow!
Thanks for all the help guys.... :-D

Good to hear Iwaki is shipping you another. That's a positive experience in my book.

In my book also Chris. Very friendly and helpful. When they get my defective unit back..they'll credit me. Sure didn't expect my circulation pump to go after 10 months. Lucky...I was getting close to the warranty going out. He said they should last at least 4 yrs.
Now just holding my breath that the thing doesn't give out till tomorrow AM and ear plugs for my ears! :-D

Just an update: Iwaki ended up crediting me for both the new unit AND the $56 overnight freight charges to get it here quickly.
Didn't expect the freight charges to be credited. Was quite impressed. Credited the day after they received the defective unit back.
That's a plus that I will keep in mind when I need a replacement.
Just a FYI...... :D

That was nice of them. I guess you get what you pay for. You pay a little more for an IWAKI but you get excellent customer service.
