why is it that leathers dont survive in my tank??? i've tried 3 over the last several months and no matter where i put them in the tank they eventually commit leather suicide in my tank. I have acros, a clam, inverts, zoos, and they all live and grow fine. I make sure nothing is rubbing against each other but for some reason leathers dont like my tank. Any ideas as to what im doing wrong or do I just have bad leather auora???

Reefdude - I don't have any problems with regular leathers (sinularia, sarcophyton) but the yellow ones have died on me once and I have a piece I am trying to save but it's wasting away.

I am the same way with mushrooms man. I used to along time ago be able to keep them, but not now..... maybe it is too much light. hehe. JK.

Hey Reefdude,
Just as a thought, leathers like alot of current and if they are not getting it when they shed they basically kill themselves because there is not enough current to help the shed their skin fall off. I know it sounds crazy but they do, do it. Also as a note what kind of lighting are you running? What is your water like... I mean how is your tank looking? Any algae problems?

Most leather like a good strong current, especially the yellows. They don't tend to do very well without a lot of current.

Can you provide a little more description of your system? Size, lighting, current, inhabitants, feeding, etc...
If clams and sps corals are doing well, i.e growing steadily, you probably have good water quality, light, and movement. Maybe you have some coral warfare going on.

I depends on the placement also. Do you have the acropora in the current and not the leather? I keep a good assortment of everything in the same tanks.
