View Full Version : [canceled] MAAST/MARSH Corpus trip

Chris
Thu, 29th May 2003, 09:01 AM
Post-poned due to T.S. Claudette back in July, and unfortunately there hasn't been enough interest to get this going again. This trip is canceled.

Here's what's planned for the weekend:

MAAST and MARSH (Houston) get-together @ the Texas State Aquarium
At 2PM on Saturday(2nd) we'll all meet at the Texas State Aquarium (maps to be put up soon).

Early afternoon dinner
We were originally planning a group BBQ but plans have had to recently be changed, so the new location for dinner is to be announced later.

Evening split up
The evening will give everyone the opportunity to split up and do their own thing. Some members from MARSH will be bringing boats and it should be pretty easy to find someone along the beach offering fishing trips. So some of the things that can be done...

Visit the Corpus LFS's.
Possible SCUBA or Fishing trip.
Evening collecting trip along the jetties.
Party! 8)

Overnight at a local hotel or camping on the beach
You'll have the option to bunk with others, get your own room, or go camping on the beach.

Collecting trip in Port Aransas
Sunday morning starting @ 9AM we'll have our collecting trip in Port Aransas. This will probably wrap up around some time between noon-2PM. The Houston folks have a 5 hour trip on the way home.

Suggested items to bring
Texas fishing license or 3-day temporary license with a saltwater stamp, buckets, hand nets, battery-operated air pumps/tubing/airstones, SUNSCREEN, mosquito repellent, hats, towels, beach/lawn chairs, umbrellas/tarps, lots of drinking water, a few first aid supplies, etc. Small coolers will be ideal for keeping collected marine life from baking in hot water. For the kids, sand toys, scooping and digging toys, plastic colanders for sifting, life jackets, etc. You'll need to wear some kind of foot protection. Please bring lawn chairs, and if you have extras, bring them too. If you have a seine net, or can purchase one from Academy (for about $25), please bring it (don't forget the poles, such as closet rods or PVC pipes). Seine nets cannot be longer than 20'. Port-a-potties and cabanas with showerheads are located along the beach.

If anyone has any further suggestions feel free to post them.

;)

Anybody organizing a Dive ?

I think some guy named Jose was going to set it all up! :-o :P :-D

Who's that  .

I would but I'm hoping to be diving in the caribean and not in the gulf around that time. Nothing is definite that's why I'm interested. I heard the rigs are fun to dive.

I know a Bay fishing guide there that is superb. Carl Wintrick is his name I've gone out with him on a dozen trips he's really a great guide.

I was going to host the BBQ at my house but my tank just crashed a week ago so my wife and I cancel this part of the Corpus meeting. Everything died except my Giant Gigas, Clown gobies and Ocellaris Clowns and a few LPS. My 19 Clams are gone and my 40+ fishes. The oldest is 7 years old.
I know exactly what happened and will post later when I have a little more time and feel like posting again so we all can learn from this disaster. I am in the process of cleanning my house and tank now to get the smell out. I think it will be a while before I restart the tank again.

I'm sorry to hear that Minh. It's all my fault that we didn't have a meeting at your house in March like you had wanted. My apology. I'll tell See Long to give you some of your frags back to get your tank start up again once everything has settled down for you.

I'm sure we can all chip in a little to help Minh later on when he's ready to restock his tank.

Minh will you still be able to attend some of the fun with us?

Minh Sorry to hear about your tank. Please let us know if we can help.

I would love to make this trip, especially the camping part. But I would like to know a little more info on the collecting part. Are we going to use nets and wade in. I'm totally clueless as I've never done this before. I realize that we will probably need our fishing license w/a saltwater stamp. I would just like a little more info on what else I need to bring.

Thanks

Henry

I added exactly that Henry. The list of things to bring is taken from the MARSH website. They do this stuff pretty often so going off their suggestions is probably the way to go.

csI can't say for certain as i've never been, but i've heard other mention stuff like shrimps, snails, blennies, gobies, pipfish, misc off critters and such.

It'll be more fun than anything though and i'm sure if you're any bit social you'll enjoy meeting up with everyone else.

Maybe someone else can chime in with some of the stuff they've found down there.

Just wanted to add what Sherri from MARSH has stated as far as this trip is concerned. I'll get my original post updated later tonight.

Join us at the Texas State Aquarium in Corpus Christi at 2 PM on Saturday, July 19th for a tour of this well-known and beautiful aquarium, including their new 400,000 gallon Dolphin Bay exhibit. Afterwards, at the request of the store owner, we will visit Tropical Fish Haven, Corpus' LFS, and then have dinner at Joe's Crab Shack. I've reserved their 3rd floor banquet room so we can kick back, have dinner, and socialize without being cramped for space or time.

We will then head out to Port Aransas to check in at (location TBA) and hit the beach! I know a couple of people are bringing their boats, so we can do some evening collecting, fishing, hit the pool or beach, or just chill out. The location where we will be staying will have both an affordable motel and beachfront amenities for those of you who wish to "rough it" in travel trailers or tents. I will be venturing down to Corpus to map out/time the route as well as view the available motels very soon.

On Sunday morning we will do some collecting along the Port Aransas jetties as well as on the bay side of Mustang Island. We'll all be on our way home by 1 or 2 PM.

So, where is everyone staying?

Isis
Wed, 25th Jun 2003, 12:18 PM
Sherri is supposed to be going to some hotels/motels/whatever to stake out the sites in Port A since the rates are much cheaper than CC. Unfortunately, she won't be doing this until next weekend, so if we get a group rate discount, you will have to wait until then to reserve. But if you want you can start looking around now. There are a few places that we are hoping will either be on or very close to the water, let alone close to some camp site areas.

If you are planning on going, please send Sherri (Cakepro on MARSH) a PM because we are trying to get a head count. The more people who go, hopefully the better group rate we get.

Well, my wife works at Holiday Inn, so we will be staying there, just trying to decide which one, as there are 3 of them. It looks like we will be at the CC holiday inn that is a couple min. from the beach, not the airport one, and not the N. Padre one...cs

There's also a nice Radisson that's within walking distance of the aquarium and right across from the USS (something) aircraft carrier museum. Rooms are nice and right on the beach.

If i was going alone, I was planning on sleeping out on the beach in the back of my truck.

Accompanied of course by a personal protection device of sorts.

Got my aquarium tickets today. Discount price on Lackland.

If needed, I can get more if people need them.

Childs 5.95
Military/Senior 8.50

I don't know if they will check IDs down there for non military people, but you are saving $1 and $1.45 off the regular price.

Ok with some schedule juggling at work (will end up working 7 days straight to get sat and sun off ugh). Wondering if I should bring my dog or not? Thinking it might be hard to find a place for him to stay while at awuarium and all? In any event if anyone wants to ride down from S Austin area I will have space for one or two more people in my truck.

Due to Tropical Storm Claudette, it may be in our best interest to reschedule this meeting for another week or two away. Due to the storm, the collecting trip will most likely be a big bust, and the rain may make overnight camping hell.

Anyone else feel the same?

STORM SURGE AND TIDE IMPACTS... AS OF 700 PM CDT THIS EVENING... TIDES WERE RUNNING AROUNDONE-HALF FOOT ABOVE NORMAL. AS CLAUDETTE APPROACHES THE AREA OVERTHE NEXT FEW DAYS... TIDES WILL SLOWLY INCREASE. THESE RISING TIDALLEVELS WILL BE IN RESPONSE TO LARGE SWELLS AND INCREASING NORTHEASTWINDS. DUE TO THE SLOW MOVEMENT OF CLAUDETTE... PERSISTENT LARGESWELLS WILL PILE UP WATER ALONG THE SOUTH TEXAS COASTLINE. TIDES AREEXPECTED TO RISE TO AROUND 1 FOOT ABOVE NORMAL BY MONDAY AND AROUND 2FEET ABOVE NORMAL BY TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY. MINOR BEACH EROSION ANDMINOR COASTAL FLOODING WILL BE THE RESULT... BEGINNING EARLY MONDAYAND LIKELY CONTINUING THROUGH WEDNESDAY. TUESDAY WILL SEE THEGREATEST IMPACT GIVEN THE EXPECTED LANDFALL OF CLAUDETTE JUST TO THESOUTH OF PORT MANSFIELD LATE TUESDAY AFTERNOON.

... TORNADO IMPACTS... AS CLAUDETTE APPROACHES THE AREA THROUGH TUESDAY... THE POSSIBILITYOF ISOLATED TORNADOES WITHIN RAINBANDS WILL INCREASE ALONG THECOASTAL COUNTIES. THE POSSIBILITY OF ISOLATED TORNADOES WILL BE THEGREATEST ON TUESDAY NIGHT AS CLAUDETTE PUSHES INLAND.

... FLOOD IMPACTS... HEAVY RAINFALL WILL ACCOMPANY CLAUDETTE ESPECIALLY AFTER IT MAKESLANDFALL. TUESDAY NIGHT AND WEDNESDAY APPEAR TO BE THE TIMES OFGREATEST POTENTIAL FOR HEAVY RAIN. TOTAL RAINFALL AMOUNTSOF 2 TO 4 INCHES WITH ISOLATED TOTALS UP TO 6 INCHES WILL BEPOSSIBLE MAINLY TO THE SOUTH OF A LAREDO TO ROCKPORT LINE. THISAMOUNT OF RAINFALL WILL HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO PRODUCE AT LEASTLOCALIZED INLAND FLOODING. FURTHER REVISIONS TO THE HEAVY RAINFALLAND FLOODING POTENTIAL MAY BECOME NECESSARY. A FLASH FLOOD WATCHWILL LIKELY BE ISSUED ON MONDAY OR TUESDAY.

wow all that freshwater will ruin collecting - lots of silty water - I'll wait till we figure out what Marsh is going to do.

I've already been contacted by Sherri from MARSH and this was at her suggestion. I posted it here because MAAST does not have a BOD and for the time being we're going off the general consensus of the group.

Okay... sorry guys. This trip is officially marked as post-poned. We'll have to do this another weekend. Claudette is just going to cause too much havoc to make this any fun.

August may be the best time for collecting anyways from what I hear. ;)

Stay tuned for updates.

Oh man, I just read Mike's post above yours... What is MARSH doing?

Give me some credit, dude...the trip was cancelled several days before the hurricane hit land. ;)

Chris, do you have a head count yet as to how many are going? It looks like only 3 people/families are going from Houston. We should discuss if that's enough of a turnout to hold this event. Email me when you get a chance.

I used up the nonexistent days off I had taking off last weekend I don't think I will be able to go if it's next weekend.

If anyone from Austin/SA wants to go down for the day I am probably going to go to port A by myself on a Monday or Wednesday and then drive back - just going for specimen collecting.
