I was catching up on some post and I remembered this very nifty website to help calculate reef chemistry additions for calcium or alkalinity using
commercial products or standard chemicals. I think it would be interesting to see if our current additions are close to what the model suggest. I would take it with a grain of salt though. :-o It is limited to the variety of products represented but if you do use some of them it may be of value to you.

I will check mine tomorrow and post the results. I would like to know how we all compare if anyone is interested.

It is cool. Its got me thinking about building a database with all the types of additions MAAST members use. This would be very helpful to new Reef owners as well as those of us who are forgetful :o

The problem with these is we never really know what our real water volume is by the time you deduct for LR and sand and add for sumps and refugiums.

I don't use a calculator. I have worked out, through testing before and after addition of supplements, how much of a supplement will raise the concentration. Its actually easier than the calculator.

If 1 cap full of product A raises calcium by 25 ppm, then 2 cap fulls will raise it 50 ppm. See how easy that is?

The problem is that if you don't add it properly you don't get an increase of 25 ppm, you get a handful of sand in your sump, or worse, a cap full of scale build up in your pump.

I tend to use the "tip product A upside down and squeeze" technique... I also find it helpful to follow a strict regimen of "about every week to maybe a month or so" while deciding when to dose

That's fine if you aren't doing SPS.

I just come in and ask my corals what they want for supper? LOL! JK, Gary, I wish it was that easy.
