I heard there is a reef like area (never seen it) way past big shell Island/Mustang Island. I bet the locals who are members could better advise ya. I have been nervous about even the little sand claims that you can find anywhere around Corpus as you never know what you may introduce to your tank. I doubt collecting is legal though.

I went down there last weekend looking around.

There is an area with two rock jetties there, but the waves
were quite rough and water was cloudy from sand and surf,
not to mention lots of seaweed has washed up from a recent
storm.

In addition, there was a metric buttload of garbage left lying
around.

I don't think you'll have a problem collecting anything.

If you can get a few of the regular crabs, I'd like to throw some
of those in my second tank as well.

I caught some from the jetties in Port Aransas that were fierce double-fisted algae eaters. They'd come out at night and double-fist algae so fast it was amazing. I ran out of algae and got nervous about them possibly eating other critters in my tank so I banished them into the sump. A few days later I found them all dried up on the other end of the house. You can get peppermint shrimp from the same jetties.

Thank god they did not make it to the dog. hehehe 8)

I've got a nice blossem of diatom algae in my tank now, but my snails are doing everything they can to keep it in check.

Current list is 3 astrella snails (spelling?) and four ocean caught snails.

The ocean snails seem to snub the brown algae. Chances are I'll
pin some romaine lettuce in there and see how they like that.

How many snails are recommended for a 55 gallon tank?

Based on the research I have done, speaking with various folks, and viewing web site discussions, it appears as though one to two per gallon on Astrea, Nerite, Cerith or Nassarius snail. Each snail serving what appears to be a particular function in the overall health of the tank. It appears as though one per gallon on turbo snails is recommended.

For some crazy reason my pistol shrimp go crazy for a diatom algae. It is really funny to watch as they will pull up a sheet of it and haul it down their hole. I guess the goby wants wall paper? :-o

hmm....some directions

head to corpus and go onto padre island

take the left turn on 361 (I think) and head towards Port Aransas

After 4-5 miles or so, there will be a small horse ranch type area.

Take a right IMMEDIATELY after, and follow to the shore.

Once at the shore, hang a right and follow beach to jetties.

If you go on a saturday, I might be able to go with you, if that
is not a problem.

I have been observing these guys for about 72 hours now, I am pretty convince that the crab is herbivor and as the snail. I also been observing it a lights out with a red buld and they never intentionally touch destroy or try to eat any of my fish or corals in my tank. As you can see the snail is picking on some of the algae on the rock it's on.

Looking at the snail it can be Nassarius so called sand shifting snails.
What do you guys think ?

I picked up about 20 snails while I was down there.

Only one of the 20 eats brown algae, and he/she/it eats more than me other snails combined.

I refer to it as "The Mystery Snail" as it blazes a clean trail across my diatom infested rock.

My Roomate went to Mustang Island some years ago and brought a really cool looking snail back that burrowed into the sand. We didn't see it for a couple of months and then every week one of my smaller clams dissapeared. After the third disappeared I started digging and that is when I found the snail latched on to a clam, boring a hole into it's shell. So if you find any snails that burrow into the sand and look like there body is to big for there shell leave them in Corpus they eat clams.
