We've had 1 member that I know of who has taken one of these courses and was extremely pleased at the results, so why not promote it? 8)

Registration for the first round of Marine Aquarist Courses Online
(M.A.C.O.) summer courses will be closing in one week on May 20, 2003.
This Summer MACO is offering some great courses. Some of our course
offerings include:

Scott W. Michael from May 18, 2003-August 2, 2003, will be teaching Care
and Behavior of Reef Fishes. In this 11-week course you will explore the
lives of coral reef fishes and how their natural history is related to
their care in the home aquarium. Scott's goal is not only to facilitate
your becoming a more responsible and better aquarist, but also to help
you gain a greater appreciation of the fishes that we keep in our living
room "oceans." He believes that the more we appreciate the ocean's
inhabitants, the more we will care for the world's coral reefs and the
organisms that live there. For those that also scuba dive, the
information presented in this course will help you better understand the
fishes you observe in the wild! (Note: the contents of the course may
change slightly based on the expressed interest of course participants.)
You can read more about this and other course by going to
http://www.reefs.org/maco/index.php .

Brian Ferguson will be teaching Acrylic Fabrication: Protein Skimmer.
The intent of this course is to provide you with the basic skills
required to design and construct quality and professional acrylic
products for aquarium use. Materials selection, preparation,
fabrication, assembly and finishing will all be taught while producing a
beckett-style protein skimmer. The skills learned in the process of this
course will allow students to produce almost any other type of acrylic
product they may wish to fabricate in the future. The end product will
be constructed using professional techniques, resulting in a
high-quality device, and useful skills for future projects. The student
should feel comfortable and competent in designing and constructing
quality acrylic items at the completion of the course. You can read more
about this and other course by going to www.reefs.org/maco/index.php .

I'm registered for the DIY skimmer class. Several registrants from the DIY calcium reactor class have also signed up; in fact, the calcium reactor discussion group has basically morphed into a preliminary discussion on skimmer design/construction. Apparently, this class will be a bit more advanced than the calcium reactor class, and a bit more expensive due to the increased cost of parts for the high quality skimmer. Still, I would recommend it, and there are probably several registrants who did not take the reactor class.

I still don't have any photos of my reactor, but looking at an old marine fish and reef magazine article, I saw that some guy who built a 3000 gallon tank had a skimmer and reactor that looks very similar (although WAY bigger) and was probably built by Brian Ferguson, the class instructor.

I signed up for the DIY skimmer class. My tank is now 6mths old and would love a quality skimmer. Acrylic fabrication skills would be nice too.
