i found a guy selling a 40 gal hex with a 175w10k MH pendant and hamilton ballast,hang on protien skimmer,fluval 403,magnun 220,
heater and all the fixins for 150.00 yes a hundred and fifty bucks!!!
so i set up the tank and it leaked alittle so i fixed that and have filled the tank with RO/DI water.
i have my salinity at 1.026 and i put 60 lbs of pure aragonite in it ...so
now the delema .....im runniong the fluval on it with some filter pads
and i plan on putting about 40-50lbs of live rock in it and running the
protien skimmer but should i put bio-balls or anything else in the fluval
or just leave it as is ???
i put the tank in my sons room and i plan on keeping softies and a few fish
any suggestions???
thanks R.

I would just use the fluval for circulation and carbon or some simple filtering. Sounds like a good set up.

you dont think i should put any thing else for filtration in the fluval??
wonder what would happen if i put some pieces of LR in one of the stages??

R.Allard,

no,no,no. youve gone about this all the wrong way. you see...what you SHOULD do is break down the tank again(completely. water, rocks, and all) disassemble the ballast. clean the tank a bit. pack it nicely into some boxes. and set it right outside of my door where 150 bucks will be eagerly awaiting your arrival right beneath my doormate for a trade! :D :-D :lol2: :skeezy:

no but seriously. that truly is one of the best deals i have read about on this message board. congratulations are in order to someone who was able to pull that off.

you're probably fine(like tim said) with leaving it empty but since you were obviously curious about it you might want to check out some research papers written about bioballs that i had read i think on reefcentral.com(sorry i cant remember exactly)but they described all the pros and cons of bioballs in your tank system.

regards, steve

ps if you get sick of that tank anytime soon feel free to call me and ill gladly take it off your shoulders(wink wink)...jk :D

:o :-D HAHAHHAAHA yea bring it to your house!!! i seem to remember something about pigs flying on a cold day in h$#!! ...LMAO>>>
my son would kill me if i sold it . he has already made a stocking list for the tank and i thought i was impatient!!
after we get my office built im going to put it down there along with a
275gal in the wall.. but thats a year away so for now its going in his room.
and thanks ill look arround for some threads and info on the bio ball thing ...
thanks

I would be willing to bet money that tank never sees the office if your son is already planning a stock list :-D You'd have to pry it out of his room or bribe him with a bigger tank.

your probably right .. i think he loves tanks more than i do and my other son is going into the service to be a marine biologist.
so as you can see he will want a tank as soon as im done with this one.
im thinking of getting him a 40 or 50 gal corner tank ..
