I just saw my rock and coral beauty right side by side brushing the back body/tails very fast and doing a little dance, they were not being mean or fighting it would be my best guess a mating dance but that can't be there two kinds of angel, so I have no idea what they were doing, any body seen this before or know what they are doing

A rock, and coral beauty are two different names for the same fish.

The rock beauty is a Holocanthus tricolor while the coral beauty is a Centropyge bispinosus. i have no clue on the matter just the scientific names i found for the two common names you posted. ive never kept angels so tim may be right about them being the same fish since we all know how many different common names each fish, invert, and coral in this hobby has!!! :P (i just cant stand it when two completely different species have the same common name and then we all get mixed up[alveopora and goneopora both being called a flowerpot for example].
hope it helps, steve
ps jaime you might want to do a search around the net a bit to find out exactly which fish it is with the proper name.

The Rock beauty (Holacanthus tricolor) gets fairly large, up to 8". It's a black and yellow fish that is supposed to be very difficult to keep. I know some suppliers list coral beauties as rock beauties on their lists.

yes your right Richard rock beautys are said to be hard to keep, and they are mostly yellow with a blue back and as they get older they get black backs, and the coral beauty are more purple with orange lines, I will get the sci. name latter today But I thought they were two kinds of angels, well I will find out and post, :-D

Rock Beauty Angel - Holacanthus tricolor and Coral Beauty Angel - Centropyge bispinosus two different kinds of angels, so now why or what wore they doing,

Yes one (coral) is a dwarf angel and one (rock) is not. What they were doing in testing each other. Stage right before fighting! Tangs and triggers will also do this. Both are competing for space or pecking order. A rock beauty is very hard to keep---reason being it's main food is sponge.

Jim is correct about the Rock Beauty Angel being difficult to care for and feed. And as he says it and the Coral Beauty are most likely attempting to establish a pecking order. I would be very careful with the RB in your tank as it is known to pick on corals, both hard and soft, and clam mantles.
You really need to research your livestock before you buy it. For fish, a good basic guide is the "Pocket Expert Guide to Marine Fishes" by Scott Michael. It has info on the majority of the fish you will find in a LFS. If you get it, it's a good idea to throw it in the car if you go out to the stores so you can look up whatever catches your eye at the time and make sure it is safe in your tank.

ok guys I mit still be a rookie, but i've learned to do some looking into what I buy now, so I know that they are niper's so the first week I had him I watched him to make sure he did not, and so far so good sponges are a part of there food but it's well it not all they eat, mine eat brine shrimp and krill, plus the algae I feed too, so I guess thats what they wore doing Jim, don't know but it looked cool, and just in case he was a niper I had someone before I order him that wanted one too for his fish only tank so if he was a bad boy I had a new home asap, ;) so I did know what I was getting myself into :-D

I have been taught something new today, I knew I should have researched it a little. My suppliers always call them the same.

Glad to hear you are doing your homework first :D Hopefully the two will get along and the Rock Beauty continues to be healthy. Here is what Scott Michael says about them. I thought some of it was very interesting, especially the eating of fish slime.
"Unlike other Holacanthus angelfishes, the adult Rock Beauty will usually perish without its normal sponge-dominated diet. It may eat and look good for many months, when suddenly its color will begin to fade, it will lose weight, and a dark area may appear on top of its head. An occasional speciman will thrive, especially if it is offered a marine-sponge food formulation, but most will perish. Young Rock Beauties will do better in the aquarium than adults but present another problem: they feed, in part, on the slime of other fishes and will persistantly chase their tankmates and nip at them."

Ocean Nutrition has a product called Angel Formula, designed for sponge eating angels. It’s second ingredient is sponge, behind Krill. Here is an excert from their web site:
“ The first fish food made specifically for Marine Angelfish. Contains their primary natural food - marine sponges. These are combined with fresh seafood's and algae to create a natural balanced diet that enhances breeding color and excellent health. “
The website for more information on the product is:

Good luck!

Good page Charley! I have used the formula and aqua yum lines with good results. The fish love them. It is also much easier than making your own mix.

No problem gang, glad what I found was able to help in some way. :) I have never used the Sponge Formula either, but do agree with Tim that the Formula frozen is some good stuff. I DIY'd some food once, and once was all it took. Although it appears you can make good food on the cheap as a group, I tried it alone and it cost too much in time and angry wifey for messing up the blender. Haha

I would think somewhere between $3 and $4 dollars (that is a general somewhere BTW). I am not sure that I have the sponge formula in stock. If you will give me a ring tomorrow, I will be more than happy to check price and availability.

That is a good deal Charley, I used to run it at $5 a pack. It seems to be a good high quality food. I still use it, among other foods, to feed with. My fish keep nice rich color. I do use other foods, romaine, caulerpa, grocery store, flake and so on but I think they get good nutrition from the formula line.

I have a Cherub angel and an Atlantic Flameback (Fireball) angel. They mate every few night. The Cherub is the larger of the two and is the male squirt out sperms while the Flameback put out eggs. Common name have to do for now because I don’t have my fish book with me. Closely related angels can interbreed. In your case, the two angels are not related enough to interbreed, plus the Rock Beauty is likely to be an immature specimen. I think they are jocking for dominance, prelude to a fight if both hold his ground.
Good luck.

if you're able to get a hold of some of the ocean nutrition angel formula then you might want to pick up an extra pack or two. from what i understand the whole ocean nutrition food line has been stopped for resale in tx. no telling for how long, the tx. agriculture dept. has put a stop on them. so whatevers left at the LFS on the shelves or freezers is going to be it for now. hopefully they'll clear up matters pretty quick.

Found out the price today. It's $5.00. Sadly, I do not have any. I will try and see if I can get some on the truck coming in next Friday.
