Update on the quest for SD sand.

Plans have changed somewhat in that now we will be driving to Atlanta, GA to pick up the furniture sometime in early June. I havent looked to see if I can find SD in the area or route. I posted to take at least 2 bags for 15 each in case I cant find any.

Maxima -

As Josh is working on this one again, I'm pretty positive that the sand will be shipped to San Antonio. This is done as a store to store transfer so it can only be shipped to one location. If more people in Houston want to get in on the deal, people from there will have to work together to get their sand. There are several people in the group that travel so maybe someone could pick it up or drop it off for everyone there.

CAC, first of all welcome to this great club. You have definately found the right group to join! I have 8 bags ordered and I would be happy to let you get two of them if the order is already done. That would be 100 lbs. How big is your tank?

cac
Sat, 10th May 2003, 06:14 PM
Thanks for the welcome Tim. I have been getting info from MAAST for a few months and thought it was time to join. Since the order was delayed until next week I thought I might be able to get in... if not then I will definitely take you up on the two bags. I am getting pieces of the tank together for now so the size of it is??? I have been trying to find a 75g RR all glass. Have also been looking at an 80g.

Tim Marvin
Sat, 10th May 2003, 09:04 PM
On a 75 you will probably only need about 3 bags..... What do you think Josh?

captexas
Sun, 11th May 2003, 11:12 AM
A 75g is 48in. long by 18in. wide. Using a sand bed calculator, a 4in. deep sand bed would need 180lbs. of sand and a 5in. deep bed would need 225lbs. Remember that Southdown sand comes in 50lb. bags.

The depth of your sand bed is really up to how you want to set up your tank. If you want the benefits of a deep sand bed as many people use, you want between 4 to 6in. of sand.

Hope that helps.

Tim Marvin
Sun, 11th May 2003, 06:30 PM
I have read numerous articles on DSB and they can work fine at 3 inch, but more delicate creatures such as, horseshoe crabs, seahorses, upside down jelly fish, and pipefish will thrive with a 6 inch deep sand bed because it is able to produce much more plankton than a 3 inch. I have also read some articles saying 1.5-2 inch can work, but I would doubt that.

cac
Sun, 11th May 2003, 08:11 PM
Since the bags are 50 lbs each I guess I should stick with 5 bags that gives me 250 lbs and I can go with a 75g or an 80g (about 4-5 inch bed) and have extra. I would rather have the extra then come up short.

Tim Marvin
Sun, 11th May 2003, 08:50 PM

Josh;

Do you have any idea if this sand will be in by June 1? If not, I may have to bale and order some Pure caribbean. I can hang in until around the 1st, but I'll definitely be needing to put sand in my new tank sometime during the first week in June.

Until then, I'm still in. Thanks for working on this!

is there any one that is coming from houston that can bring down a 75g tank for me when this order comes in

nunamakt

I'm getting my my 180g (72"x24"x24") tank in the second 1/2 of June. I found a sand bed calculator online and it said roughly 100 pounds of sand per inch. Does that sound about right? From what I've read on these forums, I should get anywhere between 4" and 6" deep bed correct? Is so, I'll need 12 bags.

I'm probably going to be moving to Europe in the next 9 months. Could I keep the sand in the bags and have the movers move them or is there comparable sand in Europe? I know Europe would probably charge the typical 15-20% sales tax so I'd like to get as much as I can before we move. Will it be OK for a long distance move?

If so, I'd like to get in on 12 bags.

I was doing some reading on DSB's. On post I came across in another forum said a lot of people buy sand from here

What's the difference between SouthDown and Aragonite?

scottz
Thu, 22nd May 2003, 01:41 PM
RedDragon,

I'm likely to be the person driving a pickup with rented trailer from Houston to pickup the sand for the Houston portion of the order.

The truck will be empty on the way up, mostly. If you need a tank brought up from here, I'm happy to do it, depending on where the tank is located down here.

scottz
Thu, 22nd May 2003, 02:46 PM
They're both big towns but, depending on the weekend I make this trip, I'll be travelling through most of both of them. When the sand comes in, remind me again and we can work out the particulars.

matt
Tue, 27th May 2003, 12:13 AM
Wow; you're getting a 180 and moving to Europe. Unless you're moving for free, I suggest buying sand in Europe, I can't imagine the cost of moving several hundred pounds of sand. As far as moving your livestock, I guess you could just go to the east coast, give the fishes a map, and tell 'em to meet you at the straits of Gilbralter

Joshua:

As Scottz has mentioned, the folks in Houston (myself included) have committed to 50 bags (50lbs each); given Scottz's truck/trailer limitations, our order is now closed. Hoping that our order will help bring down the overall cost. However, we - at least some of us - will be needing the sand relatively soon if at all possible. Thanks for organizing!! Steve.

Steve and others -
With freight charges, the Pure Aragonite sand costs just over $15.00/bag if a pallet of 70 bags is ordered. This is based on a shipping quote I got from them not too long ago when we couldn't get enough interest going to get an order done. It may be just a little under that if Josh gets a lower price as it sounds like 2 pallets would have to be ordered.

I'm not sure what the cost would be on the Southdown sand as there has not been a quote on the shipping charges from store to store from Home Depot. Remember that shipping that kind of weight is not cheap (it was like $345 for shipping fee from Pure Aragonite). Hopefully Josh can get an answer on that sometime soon.

I assume that "local guys" means ordering Southdown? That's a lot of sand. If you have some place to store it, I think you could eventually sell it all. You figure if between Maast and Marsh you have 2 pallets sold, you could probably sell another 2 pallets to the LFS in our area, and people that don't need sand will need it later on. I bet Alamo would buy a pallet themselves. Might get some bites from the Dallas/Ft. Worth area people as well.

Trae
Tue, 3rd Jun 2003, 05:47 PM
At $5 - $8 I could definently go for a half a pallett (or more depending on the wife). Have some grow out tanks I will need to sand up by years end.

Keep us informed and especially when you need final tally of # of bags and payment.

I'm guessing that these bags would store no problem inside a large rubbermaid container. If that's the case I could probably up what I could use to 5 bags for a future venture.

witecap4u
Tue, 3rd Jun 2003, 07:06 PM
Josh,

Maybe you could talk to a LFS or two and see if they would like some cheap sand to sell in their stores....Charley maybe? BTW, what are they considering a truck load?

Another Idea would be to put a post up on http://www.cichlid-forum.com/ there are a number of central texas guys on there also. I know word spreads through the SW boars(Maast,Marsh,DFW,ARK) but probably not to the FW guys....cs

TexasState

(Depending on how it's loaded,) a full 50' trailer can carry about 24 pallets. If they double stack the freight, then you'll have twice the number of pallets. A trailer could be longer then 50-' or shorter then 50'. How long is the trailer you see from HD?

Jeff Post
Thu, 5th Jun 2003, 05:17 PM
In this case a truckload is probably determined by the maximum weight possible instead of the space available. If anyone knows the weight limit that freight trucks must stay under they could probably guesstimate the number of pallets pretty closely.

What I could find on the WEB indicates a federal weight limit of 34,000 pounds. That would be a maximum of 680 bags. I do not know how many bags are on a pallet but this should give you a good estimate of pallets if you know how many bags per pallet.

The only this about that is that a 40lb bag of dog food is about twice the size of a 40lb bag of sand....Just something to think about!

Josh:

I am still interested (as one of the Marsh folks w/ Scottz). However, I think your idea of a specific end-point is a good one - both to free you from all this trouble/grief (very much appreciated even if things don't work out) as well as to allow a subgroup of those interested to order from purearagonite.com or another source in order to retain some of the benefits of a group order. My 2 cents. Steve.
