Alright everyone, as most of you know the Home Depot/South Down sand order didn't work out again. I thought we might be able to do another order from PureAragonite.com as I know several people got in on the order when Jose did it awhile back. I emailed PA to get a quote on shipping to San Antonio. Shipping is the same cost whether we go with a half (35bags) or a full (70bags) pallet so the full pallet works out to a better deal. This would break down to a little over $15 per 40lb. bag of sand (a little over $21/bag for 1/2 pallet).
NOW, I need everyone to post how many bags they are interested in. Once a majority of the bags are accounted for, then money collection terms can be discussed.
Thanks! 8)

Could you explain southdown? Is this live sand? I am setting up a 100 gallon and well am looking to get 100lbs of live sand.
Thanks

Pete -
Southdown sand and pure aragonite sand are the ideal brands of sand you can buy to use in your tank for a deep sand bed. Both are actual sand taken from the caribbean. Southdown is sold at hardware stores on the east coast, but not around here. Pure Aragonite.com is a company that sells it by the pallet and ships it to anywhere in the U.S.
Now, this sand is not "live" sand, but can become live sand after seeding it with live rock or simply a cup or two of someone elses active sand bed so that the critters multiply and expand to fill the new sand. This is very simple to do, especially if you are setting up a new tank. To buy sand that is immediately active/live, you would have to take it from someone elses currently setup tank and no one is going to give up 100lbs. unless they are breaking the tank down completely.
Hope that helps.

Well I also have a 58 gallon that I guess I could take some from to get the critters. Now PureAragronite.com, Im sure is making their share as well or they wouldnt be in the business. I come from and have family on the east coast that may be able to help. If you want I can check quanity and price including shipping.

Pete - Thanks, but I already have the shipping info and the prices are what was originally posted. The total price would be about $15.09 per bag for the PureAragonite sand. The South Down sand is cheaper, but the shipping cost is a lot plus the only way to get it here is through a Home Depot. As already posted, after several attempts there has been no success as the store on the east coast that transfers it does not get any profit from it, just all the work.
Now, PA is a business and must make a profit, but $15.09 for a 40lb. bag is much better than going to the LFS and paying around $23 for a 15 to 30lb bag. of sand.

How soon do you expect to take delivery? This is not fine sand but larger pieces correct?

Depending on when this could happen, I'd be in for 3 bags. I'd need it by June 1 or so. Thanks for taking on the odyssey of getting S.D. to San Antonio!

So sorry, re-reading I see that this order is for P.A., not S.D. Even better as far as I'm concerned; 3 bags it is!

The sooner people post replies and we get closer to the 70 bag count the sooner we can place the order. I could go ahead and order it now with a big "cha-ching" to the old credit card. If I did that I might be forced to add a "service fee" to the bag cost to help cover my time and expense. Usually they ship out the next day the order is placed and estimated 5 days till delivery. Wouldn't hold my breath on the 5 days though.

In dealing with Home Depot I wouldnt hold my breath either, you might need alot more sand to cover the body :-D

Is this thing on or what? Where are all the people that needed sand?

I could use one bag - not that it helps you much closer to your goal... :(

Come to think of it, these are not 40lb bags like S.D., right? Isn't it 30lbs? I might as well get 5 bags instead of the original 3 I signed up for.

Matt - these are 40lb. bags. Southdown comes in 50lb bags although I had heard that they were changing their packaging to 40lbs bags as well.

Okay, then I guess 3-4 bags is plenty for me. I'm sure someone will want anything I don't take. Let me know when the deal is happening and I'll give the cash as needed.

Well, from the looks of things, I have a feeling this isn't going to work out. With the sand that I need and the 3 people that have posted on here, we only have a total of 14bags out of 70!

Hi Captexas,
I need 1 bag. But it is not harmful to keep a couple extra bags in the garage if that is what is required to make up the number.
I'm in Austin though. But driving up to San Antonio wouldn't be a problem.

Ken -
As I replied to your post on the Southdown sand thread, this is pretty much a no go. There has not been enough interest to order a pallet of 70bags. Even with yours, we would still be less than 20 bags!
Sorry we couldn't help, but please enjoy the website and the rest MAAST has to offer :D
