I really want a couple or three Anthias in my tank. Right now, I have a Blue and Sailfin Tang. The tank is 65g. Dimensions are 48"widex13"deepX24"tall. Is this possible. If so, what type (Sunburst Anthia)? Should I try a few Green Chromis first? Advice please

Anthias are very timid eaters. I would have put them in your tank first and then your more agressive eaters the tangs. If you put an Anthia in now he may not get enough to eat. It is hard enough to get them to eat even in a tank by themselves. This is going to be even harder in a 45g.

Just my2cents.

Thanks for the input Tina. I think I might go with a fe Chromis. I would hate to spend a bunch of $$ on Anthias and have them perish.

Techgrad,

If you want some chromis, I have some. I have been trying to figure out how to get rid of them. 2 are in my 29 gallon (1 only has one eye, but is healthy) and 4 are in my 120. The two in the small tank woould be simple to catch. Any we can catch would be free if you are interested.

I will take all 6 of them. Let me know when to stop by so we can catch them. Where do you live? Also, why are you wanting to get rid of all of them ...just curious?

I live one exit down in Rogers Ranch. You can come by whenever. I am getting rid of them because I have gone a little crazy lately and have too many fish!!!!

IMO, 65 g tank is a liitle small. Six Chromis may be too much. I think 2-3 is OK. Also, IMO, Sailfin tang will/is too big for a 65 g tank. If it is not too big now, it will be very soon.
For a 65 g tank you can only have one Anthias. Anthias have pecking order. They do this to because the male need to continue to show domination or else the females will turn into males. If you put more than one in there, they will slowly die until there is only one in this tank.

Thanks Minh, So how big of a tank would I need to keep more than one Anthia? I plan on upgrading when the Sailfin gets too big. BTW, my Regal is going to surpass the Sailfin in growth before too long, so I might have to upgrade because of him

Anthias have pecking order. If you keep too small of a group, the weakest one will die. Larger group is needed. I have seen people with 5 Lyetail anthias in a 120 g tank. I don't think they do great. I think a 5-6 feet tank is needed to keep a group of 6-7+ before you can keep most anthias happy. It is not advisable to keep 2 or 3 anthias. I guess certain species are more aggressive than other. You will need to read more about the specific species you want to keep.

Anyone ever seen those small cardinals from Japanese waters? They are supposedly a schooling fish and are supposed to stay very small (under 2") with typical low key cardinal behavior.

Anthias are very beautiful. Aquatek had a school of them in that big tank in the back for about a month or two - simply gorgeous.
