Chevron's change to a rather drab coloring pretty quickly on their way to adulthood. They also get big...

Purple - A bit agressive but the coloring is a great addition. They eat pretty well and will dominate when it's time to eat.

Kole - Mellow as far as tangs go... pretty too in their own subtle way... Awesome algae eater and has personality. Can you tell I like this guy and will more than likely get one for my tank? 8)

The Achilles are big pigs! They'll eat and eat and always pick at the rocks for more food.. they also have a bad survival record in aquaria and are very prone to ick.

IMO i'd discount the chevron & achilles because of their size/difficulty and pick between the other two.

i would go with purple tang as my first choice, followed by the kole tang. juvenille chevron tangs are orange and blue, and turns to a dark brown- olive color with thin strips.
the achilles tang from my reading seens to be more trouble than its worth.

E) None of the above.

I would go for a Powder Blue, but they get big, and are extremely tough to keep. Where's my scantron to bubble in the answer?

Josh,

"The Conscientious Marine Aquarist" says, "Powder Blue Tang (Acanthurus leucosternon): a sometime delicate speciaes that is prone to parasitic infestations. Initial quarantine, a diet rich in marine algae and careful husbandry are required."

It also says, "the two Powder Tangs - Blue and Brown - The Achilles Tang, and the Clown Surgeon often fail to survive more than three months in typical home aquariums. They look great but may keel over under standard aquarium conditions."

I'm sure your tank is far better than 'the typical home aquarium", but it sounds like they might be more trouble than they're worth.

yep have to agree the chevron tang is a good algae grazer, but that isn't enough to justify their high price.

what about the sohal tang, they have to be on the top of my list. eventhough they have drawbacks of being aggresive (just make sure it's the last addition to a tank) an usually getting about 10-12" in an aquarium. they're great algae grazers and because they're mainly coming out of the red sea that means net caught.

I would go with the Kole...I have one in my tank along with a blue tang and a sailfin tang. Peaceful and a great algae eater...even keeps the glass pretty clean.

Purple Tang - too aggressive IMO...even had one demolish a Koran Angel in about an hour here at the store.

Others - poor survivability.

If you go with the Kole tang, in my experience they seem to be prone to uronema which cannot be effectively treated with any meds so be sure to quarantine him (4 weeks) before he goes in your tank. If you do suspect uronema - 15 min FW dips daily for 4 or 5 days.

If I were going for a small tang it would be the Kole. A large one where I had the space then a Sohal - those bad boys are awesome but I wouldn't want to stick him in anything less than a 180. My hippo tang is fun to watch but very shy.

I am partial the purple, mine (now living in a larger tank) was always in perfect condition, never had ick and was a great grazer. He was a bit ugly to the other tang, but I would definitely get another since they stay small compared to the others.
