Is anyone familiar the "Poly Filter"? It comes in a large square and you cut out what size pieces you need. It's expensive..runs about $39.00.

Thanks :rotf:

Poly filter, I Use this about once a month Sherri. I cut a piece to fit in my little fluval and run it in top tray. floss underneath, then Carbon, then lr chunks. I run carbon all the time in my canister in addition to my sump. Not sure what it's pulling out but it changes color to a nasty greenish brown after about 6 weeks. I buy the small packs at 8-9 bucks each and it will last me a month or two. I also sometimes cut a small chunk and put it in the first tray in my nano's filter to pull out some crud. Hard to quantify but I think it helps. It is very useful for removing copper and medications from hospital/quarantine tanks.

Thanks for the imput Techo...I've been using it - it does turn to a nasty brown, but from what I read on the sheet of paper it comes with, that's a good thing. It apparently extends time between water changes also. Said it can be used any time. Absorbs harmful organics.

Was wondering - Mike at Aquarium Sales put one in the front compartment when he helped me with my setup back in August, but didn't tell me how often to put it in or to leave it. He was apparently a firm believer in it cause he gave me another large sheet. Haven't had any probs so I guess its' ok. Any idea how often to replace it or leave it?

Sherri, the one I have in my little Fluval canister I change about every 6 weeks when I changed my carbon and rinse the floss. One of the small sheets will last 3 times if that was all I did. I also change it about every 4 weeks on my nano but that's partly since it's temporarily overstocked and I'm waiting for the chaetomorpha I got from JimD to take off in the refugium in back of tank and offset some of the nutrient buildup. I could probably leave it in a little longer but it's visible and in 6 weeks is a nasty green brown.

Where is the cheapest place to buy Poly filter?

I buy filter floss at hobby stores like Hobby Lobby. It's sold as pillow stuffing. 2.99 or so for a lot of that, it will last a long time.

I dont know about poly filter though, and, what exactlly IS the difference? I know it comes in sheets... does it provide more chemical bonding then filter floss?

I used to use mine at least once a month, but they seem to work pretty well, especially if your organics are high in the tank. I have been told that it changes color when it absorbs various things from your tank. I have heard a lot of good things about it.

It states the colors:
Removing harmful organics: progresses from white to tan to brown to black

Removing medications:
Blue with copper, orange with iron, green with ammonia

When safe, remove discolored filter, & save for next medication.Place new filter in water for removal of conventional organics & water purification.

I leave mine in and I have no problems. And it stays a dirty brown.

Brett - I'd have to dig up the specifics of the process but the material itself is chemically modified to attract free ions of heavy metals, organics etc and it definitely works. It's not just plain ol filter fiber as far as I know.

I have found that the best price for Poly-Filter is atwww.drfosterandsmith.com. You can buy three at a price break for $4.49 each, otherwise they're $5.59 each.

I'm looking at mid-May for the Galveston trip, most likely Saturday, May 17th. This year we're changing the sites...it seems that several of our members collected quite a few nifty creatures and tons of peppermint shrimp around twilight at the place where we initially met (the end of the Seawall). I haven't hammered out all the details yet but this year will be bigger and better! I think we're skipping the San Luis Pass pier, since the beach was so much more eroded last year than the previous year. I will keep everyone informed as the details get worked out! Glad to hear you guys will be there!

Awesome, I'll mark that in my calender. :)

Whats funny is that MAAST will be having a meeting/collection trip in June or July down in corpus, it would be cool to see some of the houston crowd there as well.

Hey guys . I heard a rumor that pollyfilter is the same type of filterpad that they use in kidney dialisis machines. Has anyone heard the same?
