I have all three: PM Hot1, Remora Pro and the plain Remora. My favorite is the plain Remora ( with the upgrade mag pump). Reason IMO all three skim about the same (great). The PM Hot1 is a pain to clean. The Remora Pro has an overflow like the PM Hot1 which has to be connect to somekind of collection container. The plain Remora is easy to clean, fits about anywhere and is very simple to use!

Thanks Jim. That is kind of what I was wondering. The HOT 1 looks too involved for me. I like simplicity. What is the price of the regular Remora?

I just look the price up at Premium Aquatics with the mag 3.5 pump upgrade $176.95 plus shipping. How big is your tank the plain Remora is rated to 75 gallons and the Pro on up!

Jim -
Check your info again. The regular Remora upgrade is to a MaxiJet 1200. The Remora PRO upgrade is to the Mag Drive 3.
Tech -
Marine Depot catalog has the regular Remora with MJ1200 for $163.95 and the Pro with the Mag3 for $226.95. Also, if you want the Prefilter box, it is $28.95 for the Remora and $42.95 for the Pro. Be sure to specify which pump you are using as the prefilter boxes are different in size depending on whether you upgrade or not.

I've seen peoples sticking Mag 5, 7 into their Remora. This is why it's called a mod. Of course, more is not always better. Peoples add Maxijet to their Bak Pak 2R skimmer, and wonder how come they're getting micro bubble back into the tank. The Bak Pak skimmer will actually produce more skimmate if it's used with the manufactured stock Rio stump.

Yes, you can modify it yourself and put anything you want on it, even an AmpMaster 3000 if you wanted to blow the thing up. I was referring to the upgrade that is offered by Aqua C on their Remora skimmers. There is only like a $5 difference on the Remora upgrade from the Rio 800 to the MJ1200 so it is well worth it.

That bring back some bad memory. I was filling up my old 55 gallon tank.

It was half filled when I start dumping salt in there. I drop a Mag 950 in there to mix up the water. Well, the tank was only half filled. When I turn on the Mag 950 pump, water shoot up straight into the ceiling. It shot the ceiling hard. I was stuck right under neath, chugging saltwater, and getting shiver from the cold salt water sprays.

Thanks Vihn! :rotf:
After a long hard day on a construction site and having a bad headache, that one gave me a good laugh :-D
I shouldn't laugh too hard, I tend to have that kind of luck as well!

Captexas,
It is $5.00 upgrade for the 1200 maxijet, but it is a $18.00 upgrade for the mag.

Hi;
I have the in sump version of the remora; urchin. Without the mj1200, it's a pretty feeble skimmer. To be honest, I'd save some money and get a prizm; it's 1/2 the price and pulls about as much gunk out. It's a bit more finicky to adjust, though, and not built as well. PM I don't know about, but it has a good reputation.
Getting back to the remora mod, has anyone tried anything bigger than a MJ1200 on the regular (non-pro) remora or urchin? Maybe this would charge up my skimmer. I have a 45gal reef and I think the urchin is barely adequate...

Matt,
I have the urchin with the MJ1200 and am also running it on a 45 gal tank. I emailed the folks at aquaC and asked them about running a mag3 on it, and they responded that running a mag3 on the regular urchin wasn't a good idea. They recommended putting a ball valve in line between the pump and the skimmer so you could regulate the flow better. I haven't done it yet, but I'm kicking the idea around.
