View Full Version : Southdown sand

I'm looking for southdown sand for my new 180 gal tank.. But the HD in Houston doesn't carry this sand (except those HD in the Northeast region). ChrisIsBored from Marsh group said that someone named Josh K organized the group order for this sand at only $10/ 50lbs bag last year, and that Josh K is a frequent member here.. So Josh, do you still have some SD sand bags available or can you organize another group order for that sand? I know some people in the Marsh group are also needing this sand for their new tank too..
Thanks,
Quoc

Hehe... welcome to the group Quoc.
You might want to save Josh some of the trouble and go ahead and organize everyone in Houston FIRST and it may be easier to do.
justletmein = the infamous Josh K.

I called up PureCarribean Arragonite and I was told that we can order a pallet (70-40lb bags) for 15.95 a bag shipped. This might be something to think about if the SD idea doesn't pan out.... I have Pure Carribean Arragonite in my reef, and I love it. :fish2:

Josh,
I just post this topic on the Marsh group to find out how many people want to order the sand. I'll keep you posted on that. I need at least 10 bags myself (properly 15 bags). What's the minimum bags we need for you to make an order?

Here are the sum of sand bags needed so far:
Gene (Marine) = 7 bags
Reefaholic = 10 bags
Dow = 1 bag
Myself = 10 bags
EatenbyLimestone (from Marsh group) = 3 bags
Total so far = 31 bags
There is another fellow (SuperDave) from Marsh that also want this sand and had make the contacts w/ HD himself, and look like he may be able to place an order of around 50 bags through that place (properly in Houston) at ~$10/ bag. I'll check w/ him to see if he want to co-ordinate this order w/ Josh since it's better to get a one big order to save cost on shipping.

Here's what I have so far.
I have located a store that has a little over 50 bags @ $4.99 each. Add to that around $5.40 for shipping. The person I contacted has this material on hold and can get more. The material MUST be shipped to another HD in our area. They will not ship to a residence.
I have also contacted the manufacture but they will only ship in full loads of 16 pallets containing 70 bags each. They are in the process of pricing the sand and shipping for us. I should have this info Monday.
I will get back with more details if there is intrest.

Hey SuperDave, welcome to our forums. :)
In your MARSH post you mentioned the name OldCastle as the brand name. I haven't heard of it before nor seen the name ever come up. How positive are you that this is the same stuff?
SuperDave
Fri, 3rd Jan 2003, 11:35 PM
The person at the HD I contacted assured me it is the same company. He said they only changed there name. He also stated he contacted the manufacturer that he gave me the # for and the material is Ca based and is mines off of the Keys and in the Bahamas. Sounds like the same material to me.
I have also contacted another manufacturer that uses the same material but packages 50# in a reuseable sealed hard plastic container. He is pricing a bulk order for us with shipping. This product may be a few dollars more but would ship and store better and have the added bonus of the ever popular storage for frag meets.
And thanks for the welcome.

More updates: (from the last count of 31 bags)
Tim Marvin: 3 bags
rhane71 (from Marsh): 1 bag
SuperDave (from Marsh): 10 bags
Fish R Fun store on Westheimer, Houston: 10 bags (I talked the owner into buying this stuff, and he said he would give it a try :))
There are some others that expressed interest, but has not confirm on the # of bags yet.
So, the latest # of bags = 55 bags
And now, it's between Josh and David to decide who should place the order, which ever way convenience for all of us.. Of course,it would be more convenient for me to pick it up in Houston, but I don't mind to drive up to San Antonio to pick the stuff up either.. I may be able make a good use of the trip by visiting some lfs in San Antonio to see if they have some special stuffs..

In fact, he asked me the other day about your email address so but i don't have it As Vinh said, you can PM him on the Marsh website and i think he don't mind give you his phone # in case you two want to talk on the phone. I think he is waiting on the qoute from the manufacture of the SD sand to get an even better price/ buckets this week.
If I count the #bags correctly, the requested # of bags has gone up to 121 bags now, so hope we can get a good price!

Does everybody remember the old beer adds where Randy Quaid said "I'll get back to you with more details"? Well here I go.
Cost and availability in mind I believe it would be best to order from the manufacturer. I am in the process of trying to find better shipping rates than the manufacturer quoted.
Here goes the good part. They told me that it is the Southdown product only under a new name. New owners or something. They only sell the 50# bags to commercial customers like Home Depot but we would be purchasing 40# bags. Price with shipping $8.25. Please do not hold me to this price as it is estimated shipping. This is a little lower than HD's shipped price. With any luck I may get it lower still. But this is what my contact said it should be.
Now for the bad part. I would actually have to order it by the truck. Which is 1120 bags. Does anyone want thier own beach? This would give everyone that wants some all they could need for quite some time. What does not sell here I may be able to push @ LFS.
Let me know what you think.
SuperDave

Plus, if we decide not to go with the large order we still have the HD that is holding one pallet and can get more. :D

Mon, 6th Jan 2003, 09:46 PM
Holy :fart: SuperDave! That's a hell of a deal if that price holds true as it comes out to $0.21/pound. BUT, buying a truckload comes out to $9240.00  That's a lot of money that I'm sure someone will have to pay up front to get South Down and the shipper to commit to the deal. Plus someone will have to have some place to store about 18 pallets (I think that's how many fit on a truck) until it gets picked up by members or can be sold to LFS's. I'm sure a lot of LFS's in Houston, S.A., and even Austin would take a bunch of it as they could make a good profit reselling it. You will need someone with a heavy-duty truck and heavy-duty trailer to move it from Houston to S.A. also. If the shipment was split in half, that's 22,400 pounds of sand to transport. I think that may be more trouble than it's worth, but that's just my opinion.
Anyone on here a truck driver with an 18 wheeler available? :-D

Super Dave, can't SouthDown sell you by the pallet ?
fishcraze
Mon, 6th Jan 2003, 10:38 PM
David,
Are you sure you can sell the extra sand to the lfs? otherwise, that would be a lot of sand to hold w/ a truck load. You said that you can get 1 pallet (70 bags?) or more from HD at ~$10/ 50lbs bag? that's about $0.20/ lb, not bad at all and less troublesome. what do ya think?
SuperDave
Tue, 7th Jan 2003, 08:16 AM

I hate to look like an idiot here, but I have finally got a direct response from the Bridgewater HD in New Jersey about the shipping. They told me the shipping for the two pallets of sand, which they do have on hand, would be about $2000. I said no thanks and priced delivery through some consolidators but only got the price down to $1500.
Josh, how did you get it delivered at the price you had? And if you can duplicate that feat please do so again.
Once again, I am sorry to keep everyone on hold for so long but I did spend quite a few long distance calls trying to pull this order together.

If we can't get the southdown sand in the next 2 weeks would anybody be interested in getting a pallet of Pure Aragonite Sand. www.purearagonite.com . It's supposed to be some good Aragonite and we can get it for $15 dollars a bag shipped if we purchase 70.
And I think there is no sales Tax since they are out of state therefore it would be like buying the bag for $13.50 + tax.
Let me know.

I'd be down with that. Checked site and now they have it for 11.95 a bag. It's basically same grain size as southdown right? If so I'd be in for 5 bags, maybe 10 if we need to make the order happen.

Correct the grain size is the same. The site has the bags for 11.95 but you need to add shipping and shipping on 40 lbs isn't cheap that's why we need to buy the pallet to get them shipped for $15 bucks a bag.
I'll get 5 bags for myself therefore that makes it 10.

Okay, for some reason he said the in-store transfer that we did last time is not getting any cooperation this time around. He asked if I'd like him to call SD and see about ordering direct from them, so that's where I left him. Honestly thouogh, I think 2 pallets will not be cost efficient to have trucked in from Florida. So, he says he hasn't forgotten, but he's kicked it up to the manager because he's out of ideas, so he's waiting for his manager to come up with something.
I'd say, go with the purearagonite.com unless you don't mind waiting a while. I think the in-store transfers are not working due to seasonal stock variances, last order was in the summer time.
JustLetMeIn, thanks for all your help. I know it's hard to get those transfers going.
If anybody wants to get the PureAragonite Palet We can still do it. The price would be $15 dollars a 40 lbs bag shipped with what seems to be no sales tax.
So far we have:

Hey guys... since this thread is already so long, you may want to just create another one labeled "Pure Aragonite.com group order" so you can clearly tell who's ordering how many.
Just a suggestion.
