Last I knew... Misti said...
The next meeting is scheduled for Sunday, January 19 at 3pm at Tina's house.
Anyone spoken to Tina lately to see if she'd still like to host us?

This meeting we were gonna try to get things a little more "together". We were talking about trying to get an "expert" in the group to talk to us / teach us about something of interest. I know that lots of folks have an interest in frag and propagating their own corals yet do not know where to begin. This would be a great topic to start with. (ANY IDEAS< PLEASE CHIME IN!) We also wanted to have people bring frags to trade, fish, equipment, whatever you need or want to get rid of or share.
We could start a list of topics that we want to discuss, things we want to learn, etc. and start planning in advance (like the acrylic workshop) so we can make these meetings more productive and interesting. Hopefully we can get a good turn out for the 19th!
Please share any other ideas you have!

yeah especially on splitting mushrooms. I have some pretty turquoise and a big purple one I would like to try splitting.

Splitting shrooms isn't very hard. Just get yourself a sharp knife or one of those tools from a hobby store and slice away.
Try to do it in one slice as to not cause too much damage.
If I had some shrooms I'd be tempted to bring them and show everyone.

I thought we just had a January meeting already. I probably lost count, but there was around 9 to 11 different reefers ( not counting Ben's kid ) at my place this weekend.
I have never done it this way, but I heard you can cut Leather head, and mushrooms into Pizza Slices. If I make it to the meeting, I'll donate a leather head, and a burgendy Mushroom for the frag. If I remember, I'll get some Bridal Vei/Net from Wal-Mart. I heard with the leather, you just chop the head off, Chop the head off into matrix cubes, and the leather should grow back a new head. Or just trim the edge off of the leather. Any experienced propagators?
Anyone have a brand new set of Xacto Knifes? Wal-Mart carry those thin plastic disposable boards.

I've got the tools for it Vinh... you bring the corals and we'll do some slicing.
Now that I think of it.. I can steal a rock from my g/f's tank and I can cut a few blue shrooms from there.

If you want mushrooms I have plenty....in fact TOO many...I am trying to get rid of them from my tank. They can and have become a pest...

What type mushrooms are they. Mushrooms are very easily propagated.

You wouldn't be the first guy who try to chop the mushroom in the blender. I think the last guy who tried, he blend the mushroom up too much, and it just turn white and melt away.

What all are we going to propagate? I'd be interested in seeing all your techniques Vinh. The ones Joshua is talking about.

I let Misty borrow the Anthony Calfo book to bring to the meeting. I heard from coral farmers that it's a Bible book on propagation. If you want to learn different Propagtion technique, you should check it out. I've only read two or three pages of it, but it have many interesting picture illustrations (hanging frag down from a rod, using milk jug to make stable Live Rocks arches, how to dump Kalkwasser, making water raceway/Maze for growing corals, (when you mount a fresh cut SPS frag, mount it upside down, etc.) Some of the stuff illustrated in that book, I would've never even though about doing it that way.

I have found that mounting them right side up works just as well for me. They say you sould mount them upside down at a 45 degree angle, but I have found the mortality rate to be the same no matter which way I mount them. I lose a couple out of a hundred frags, probably due to trauma from the mounting process, or the cutting. I just did about 10 frags off of a dark purple Acropora tenuis that I have, and 5 frags off of one of those orange ricordia mushrooms. I'll probably frag up some of the purple and blue bullseye mushrooms over the weekend. I need to make about 60 more of the little critters.

I need to frag some off of that blueish green finger leather and probably the long polyp leather also. I think 16inches across is getting a little big. I will probably just trim around the outer edge on that though.

Tim any chance you can take some time off and head down here for the meeting? You've got a much larger coral selection and it would make things a bit more interesting as well.

How many people are we going to have for a turn out? I can order some corals just for us to frag. If everyone want to pitch in some money they can take home the creations. Better yet Joshua or one of the guys down there can order them and keep them in the tank until we are ready for the meeting.
