Hey guys, I'm going to place an order for another 100 lbs. of this stuff... so anyone interested in making it a bigger order?
Price comes to about $1.25/lb(includes shipping). I'll try to contact them to find out how much it will take to get it cheaper. I was pretty pleased with my last order... and the price is much better than i've found locally.
Post a reply or PM me if you'd like to hop in on an order.... i'll probably place the order next week around the 14th!
;)
Here are some pics from my last purchase:

Same guy.... he's just selling on eBay as well... i'm pretty sure it'll be cheaper than $1.25/lb but I was using that as a base pricing. ;)
I think through eBay he quoted me $25 for shipping... +$25 for the rock, so it would be $1/lb.
Chris

Oh, heh... He quoted me $21.90 to 78250 per 50 lbs.
I'm sure the same... I deleted the email... just made a guesstimate :P

Cool... so 50 lbs?

At $21.90 for 50 lbs I'll take 250lbs. Send me a bill for $110 and I'll paypal you it. See if the guy can send it straight to me so we won't have to worry about how I'll get it.
Chris

Tim, the $21.90 Josh mentioned was the shipping cost for the 50 lb order. So $25 + $21.90. That's his ebay price, it's a few dollars more directly from the website... www.hirocks.com
I got a reply from the guy and he said because of UPS shipping he can't get much cheaper but it might save a little bit if we get it shipped via freight truck which would be up to a 500 lb pallet.
We'll see.... but expect it to be between $1 - $1.25
;)

You can still ship through the airlines, but there is a big application and background check if you haven't been shipping or RECEIVED shipments on a regular basis before 9/11. They just want to know you are safe.

Well, I just want to try it out first so put me down for 150 lbs at $1. or 100 lbs at $1.25. I can make things grow out on it like star polyps and zooanthids which I have growing like crazy.

Cool... i'll find out sometime next week what the true total price will be per pound when we're set on how much to order. If you're not heading down here anytime soon i'll bring the rock up there this time too

If we each pitch in a little over $400 each we can get a ton for $1300 total including shipping.. That would be almost 700 lbs each.

Haha I like the way you think Tim. Now to get a couple more tanks to add them to. :P

Now just think, if you take that 700 lbs, put it in your system for a couple months with calcium levels in the 500's you now have coralline incrusted live rock without the pests, like pistol and mantis shrimp. Now you sell the rock for $3 a lbs that computes to $2100. Not bad for about a $425 investment and a few months patients.

Shwoooo, thank god!

I'm surprised there aren't more people wanting a few pounds... In a few months this stuff should be covered just as well at the $4-$6/lbs. stuff you get from the local shops! 8)

300 pounds worth of rock has been ordered!
We couldn't get any discount on shipping since we're short of the 500 lbs. frieght.... but it's only coming to $1/lb.
I was told it should ship tomorrow... UPS ground can take up to 10 days... I think my last order took about 6 days to arrive... so we'll see... 8)
Can't wait to see the look on the face of the UPS guy..

So how much of the rock did I end up with?
Chris
Sat, 14th Dec 2002, 02:28 AM
I got 150 lbs worth for you Tim. At $1/lb that's how much you requested. ;-) I'd like to head up there to Austin soon just to check things out so I'll send you an email later on to get directions from you and I can drop them off.

Hey guys, is it better to put the base rock on the bottom of your reef than the live rock. Doesn't it decrease the filtering capacity of your tank?????

It is usually called base rock when it isn't as pretty as the rest. This rock is dry reef rock and will be live rock about a month after it is put into a tank. All live rock means is it has bacteria living on it. Better grades may have a lot of coralline, corals, crabs, and other critters. I am going to place this in a 150 gallon sump until it is covered in coralline algae. The calcium levels in the grow out system are running in the high 500's and the extra rock will give a place for more of the coralline algae to grow, as it is growing like crazy. I am also putting in a couple Gigas clams in the 5-8 inch range in an effort to keep down the calcium levels.

How does this rock compare to Fiji weight wise? Is it heavier or lighter? About the same size for size?
Chris

They both seem to be about the same to me.

Chris, I assume you'll need some money pretty soon. Do you want me to send you a PayPal?
If you have cash I'd prefer that since PayPal has that extra percentage fee. Shoot me an email though if you'd rather do PayPal. The rock should be coming in some time towards the end of the week.
Chris

Everything coming my way PayPal shaves a little off the top. I think it's like $0.30 + 2 or 3%. :?

That's why I only accept bank account to bank account payment from Paypal. I would reject whoever try to send me payment by credit card through paypal.

Chris, I could use those extra few pounds if noone claims them. thanks
Gene, I ordered 50 pounds. You can assume as much as you need, just lemme know how much is left so I can pay Chris and pick it up.
I already promised Gene the remaining 25 lbs. If you want less than 25 let me know Josh, i'm sure I can put it to good use.

I want the rock, but I don't need it. If someone wants some to fill their tank I can give some up also. So just let me know and I'll buy all you have left even if it is more than the 150lbs.

I just picked up 46 lbs of the dry rock from Vihn. I went ahead and gave him $1 a lbs for it even though he only wanted .85. Vihn has always been a good guy to deal with, but anyway, this rock looks pretty cool. I have one huge piece that took most of the weight that is really porous. This is going to be some good rock in a couple months! I am looking forward to getting the other 150lbs to start culturing it!
Tim Marvin

Well with the rock from Chris I'm up to almost 200 lbs. That should hold me for now until I get this cultured out. Thanks for the offer though.

Chris good looking rock! I'm glad I got some with you. This will be some really nice rock in a few months. I have seeded it with pink and purple coralline. I'll keep you posted.

Chris, you should see the hi-rock now. Some of it looks as good as base rock from the store already(patches of coralline). Another month or two and it will be covered in coralline!

How's everybody's hawaiian rock doing? Did you like it? Is it too heavy? Would you ever buy it again? Did it mess up your pH when you put it directly into your main tank?

Everything went well. It looks like big chunks of coralline now.

I have 1500lbs of base rock that has been culturing for two weeks nowfi anyone is interested. I will let base rock go for $1.25 a lb. I am also in the process of culturing the rock for coraline growth, zooantid and others. My goal is to culture this rock for several months, so I am not really ready to sell cultured rock yet. I just saw this post and wanted to offer base rock to anyone that needs it. Thanks.
