well, the plumbing is almost complete on the tank. it is drastically different than what i had before...... i have completely removed the overflow and i'm using two 1" bulkheads at the top corners of the aquarium with upturned elbows for overflows.. these drain into a 1 1/4" line to the sump. the old overflow bulkead that is at the bottom left of the tank is hooked to a 1" pipe that runs the back length of the tank to draw water out from under the rockwork and is returned through a closed loop system to homemade returns. plenty of ball valves and unions have been used to make the tank easy to maintain and remove pumps for maintenace. the two return lines ( one for closed loop and one for sump return) are 3/4"line that split into two 1/2" return nozzles that hang on the back of the tank, so i have 4 nozzles that can be rotated to push water around the tank...about 1500 gal/hr. water movement.

Interesting.... Let us know how it works with the small overflows...Make sure the snails can't get into them or they block the overflow and you'll have a flood... Been there...

i have intake screens that fit into the overflow fittings.. there will only be about 600gph into the overflows, the 1 1/4" diameter should be more than enough to handle that amount of flow. :-D

i have thought about doing that but the water level may be too low that way. there should be little or NO noise as the outlet in the sump is below water level. and the intakes will break up any sucking sound.. it will all be tested bofore it is put into use.

I have a mag 7 on my DAS and the 1 inch overflow is plenty loud! I have to keep a screen on the overflows to keep out the snails and I have to put a ball valve on the pump so it doesn't overflow the tank. I'll never use another tiny overflow like that again. You still have time to put in 1 1/2 or 2 inch overflows. Since the DAS I only use 1 1/2 inch and they are so much better. If you have too slow a flow in the sump you'll grow cyano and other unwanted things.

This is just my opinion.... Please don't take offense......Bigger really is better......

I don't like water on the carpet, but not half as much as the wife doesn't like it! A flood could mean the life of your reef and possibly your own life.... :o

i hear what you are saying but i figured since i had been running it for a year with one 1" overflow... i should have no problem with two... ;) ..
